Meet Hunter Dorton | Mushroom Farmer and Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hunter Dorton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hunter, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We have always loved agriculture and nature so naturally in efforts to grow our own food, we were led into farming. Once you work for some other people for awhile you start to realize that you can’t always exanchge more time for dollars. You eventually run out of time. Being able to have a little foresight and see the inevitability of not having enough time to earn money, we decided to invest into starting something on our own. Little by little, and over these last few years, we’ve grown to a point where we can make a comfortable full time living doing what we love. Ultimately our thought process was how do we make money from our own homestead and not have to work for anyone else in the future.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our business is named Hempin Shrooms because we started growing hemp and then eventually started growing mushrooms and became Hempin Shrooms. We offer healthy mushrooms based products from Powders to tinctures to Fresh edible mushrooms. We also grow our own herbs to make tea and we grow hemp and make value added CBD products. We love teaching, educating, and showing people how to forage and grow food for themselves. We hope to increase local food security and be passionate advocates for God’s Nautre and preserving the local ecology and ecosystems. Making people more resilient, self sufficient, and capable to thrive on their own land.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love farmers markets so we would most likely visit those. The Franklin Farmers Market is one of the largest in the south and it’s attached to the factory of Franklin which is a historic venue with tons of things to do. We could go downtown and visit many of the iconic spots around Nashville. There are also a lot of nature trails around and good places to hike and fun things to see that would be exciting to visit as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many people to thank and I am constantly in awe at everything God can provide in one’s life. God is the first one to give a shout-out to because without God we would be nothing. Secondly our family and loved ones who support our goals and our dreams. Our customers who support us and purchase our products and everyone that’s supported us along the way. We are so blessed on so many fronts that we just strive to provide wholesome healthy products that can truly make a difference in one’s life.
