Meet Adera Brown | Abstract Artist and Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adera Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adera, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because art has always been my way of speaking when words seem to fail. From a young age, I found myself drawn to the freedom and expression that creating provides. It allowed me to process emotions, tell stories, and connect with people in ways that felt authentic and meaningful.
Art has been the foundation of my journey toward self-discovery and self-love. Over time, I realized I could combine my passion for art with my love for fashion, creating something that not only represents me but also inspires others. I want my work to encourage women to embrace their individuality and see themselves as the masterpieces they truly are.
Every pattern I draw, every piece I create, is an extension of that mission—to show that we’re perfectly pieced together and that creativity has the power to uplift, empower, and transform.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is my ability to merge fine art with fashion, creating hand-drawn patterns that transform into wearable pieces of art. Each design tells a story of individuality and self-love, encouraging women to embrace their uniqueness. I’m most proud of how my work has empowered others while staying true to my values of creativity and authenticity.
Getting to where I am today was far from easy. As a self-taught artist and designer, I’ve faced countless challenges, from learning new skills to balancing my creative passions with running a business. But each obstacle taught me resilience and resourcefulness. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that progress doesn’t have to be perfect—it’s about showing up, trusting the process, and letting your passion lead the way.
What I want the world to know about my brand and story is this: **Brwn & Blu** isn’t just about clothes—it’s about creating a space where art meets self-expression, where women can feel confident and inspired in their own skin. Every piece I create is a reminder that we are all masterpieces, and worthy of celebrating.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Spend the afternoon at The Heidelberg Project, a unique outdoor art installation or at The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) exploring its incredible art collection, & also the Eastern Market, especially on a Saturday, to check out the vendors, murals, and fresh produce.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Eric, has been my biggest supporter, always believing in my dreams and encouraging me to keep going. My kids inspire me daily to create and build a meaningful legacy, and my church family has been a constant source of encouragement and love. I also have to shout out my nieces, who always show up expecting a fun project when they come to my house—they keep my creativity flowing! I’m endlessly thankful for all the people who have poured into my journey.
