We had the good fortune of connecting with Janee Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janee, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a more creative career in order to pursue a catalyst for change in my communities. I traveled and saw my community and overcame alot if adversity, and decided to take action to make the changes I’d like to see around me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My brand is a developing lifestyle healing brand by the name of Love Essence co., our mission is to spread healing and understanding in all communities but primarily focusing on Black and Brown communities, through affirmational posts, workshops, in person community work such as mentoring, community clean ups, and gardens, and hoping to expand to much more. I am most excited about our first workshops coming in September on farming and Sisterhood. Bringing workshops to communities specific to their struggles and trauma is a very fullfilling thing for me to be able to accomplish because there is a space and need for it. We all have different history and the complications and ramifications from those times are still relevant today, and needs healing. We all deserve love, we all deserve healing, all we deserve the ability to evolve and break our generational curses.
Being an entrepreneur is never easy, although there is so much love in every step. I’ve found hardships in my own financial literacy, finding funding, as well as balancing my own personal life and putting in the work on myself with a lifestyle healing brand, i must also prioritize my own healing . Through networking and the people I’ve met along this beautiful journey I’ve learned so much as long as I’m willing to listen. As far as help with my LLC to organizing a business plan I’ve had assistance and support. I’ve invested time and money into my craft and passion, books, seminars, YouTube videos, etc.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie were to visit, I would start with a multitude of places I generally like to go to the park or the gym sometimes a good poetry night. My Bestie and I would grab coffee at Ponce city market or local black owned coffee shop, talk about books and philosophy in little five points or west end. On Tuesday we may do yoga at colony square and walk around midtown, riding scooters, and ending with a drink at Jojos Beloved in colony square. The next day, Wednesday we would walk the belt-line, seeing all the different people and animals, and heading towards the skate park. Theres so many different artists and creatives at the Old fourth Ward Skate park, definitely a vibe and very comfortable for myself and my best friend. Thursday may be spent at Atlantic station, where my gym is and we would eat a salad from Publix and get some good sets in at the gym afterwards sitting in the greenery soaking up some Sun. Lastly, on the day of Friday we would eat food at Krog street market by day, mingling and connecting, whilst later that evening we will chill on Edgewood, barhopping and having a good time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my Mother, also books by Joe Dispenza, and also a youtube channel by the creator by the name of Thoraya. My mother is a beautiful, kind individual, but seeing the adversity in our life caused me to look for activism and change in our communities because we deserve better, all of us, and I believe communtiy and understanding can aid in that. Ive read alot amazing perspective changing books so its hard to really pick just one but I go with author and physicist Joe Dispenza explained alot of crucial ideologies amongst which I understood: its up to me and everyone around me to be the change we want to see. Lastly Thoraya, has created a series comprised of interviews with strangers and their deepest feelings and secrets which shows me we are alot more similar than we are different and everyone is hurting in different ways.
