We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayniah Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shayniah, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is patience. There are seasons where business isn’t as “poppin” as others and can be quite discouraging. Just because you aren’t getting booked as much doesn’t mean anything. Just take that time to rest up and learn new things to improve the business because when it gets busy……wheewww lol, it gets busy!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being kind, trust-worthy, and having excellent customer service is what sets me apart from other makeup artists. You can have the greatest skills but if you don’t know how to talk to people or if you treat people bad, no one will want to hire or work with you. I got into makeup in high school after I got my makeup done for senior pictures. I still remember the way I felt when I looked in the mirror. I love making others feel the way I felt that day. It wasn’t easy because I didn’t truly believe that a makeup artist is a “real job” or at least I didn’t think that I could ever achieve that goal. Family support helps sooo much. Internships, collaborations etc, all helps. I’ve learned to keep networking and be confident because how you feel about yourself shows. I want the world to know that doing what you love may time years but being consistent and faithful will get you where you need to be. I am Shay and my makeup business is called SHAYDED. Book with me and you’ll have and you won’t be disappointed!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly I’m not much of a go out party type of gal. I’d probably bring my friend to a cabin where there is a pool, jacuzzi, pool table etc. and turn up there! Bring on the music, drinks, and spades!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank God first because not many people get to do what they truly love as their career. He’s been faithful to me even in the slow seasons. I’d also like to thank my mom for pushing me and believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. She always has my back and has not once let me down. Thank you to all of the production teams that have allowed be to be apart their team, especially Showtime Productions Gvl because I won best makeup for the Indie Series Awards ‘24 with them. Last but not, least I’d like to thank my beautiful clients for keeping me in business.
