We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerrold James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jerrold, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Decatur Georgia. My upbringing impacted who I am in a major way. Growing up I was always surrounded by music. Whether that be at school in marching/concert band. Or at home with my parents playing Earth Wind and Fire. Being exposed to all kinds of music influenced me as a person as well as my music.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would describe my music as a mix of Jazz, Hip-hop,& RnB. My music combines smooth bass lines and chords with simple yet catchy melodies. Most would put my music in the Lo-fi hip-hop genre but my fans don’t always agree with that and refer to some of my music as “Soul Beats” music good for the soul. I’m proud of the fact that my music is on all music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. I’m also proud to have worked with many talented artists and producer’s over the years. Recording, mixing, mastering, and making beats on many different projects. I got where I am today by continuously trying to be better every day. It wasn’t easy and it took many years but consistent effort will always be the key. One lesson that I’ve learned is that everyone starts somewhere and starting is the most difficult part of the journey. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or discouraged when there’s a lot you don’t know but that’s why consistent work will always be the best way to overcome obstacles. I want the world to know that when I make music the goal is to connect with the listeners. I put everything I have into my music and that’s what transfers emotions and adds depth to the music. If someone is sad music has the power to cheer them up and I want to be able to do that with my music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting I would take them to Piedmont Park and walk around for a bit or play basketball then head over to ponce city market to get some food. After that, we would probably head over to midtown and go to some of my favorite record stores as well as check out some other shops and stuff over there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out some of the producer’s that influenced my music. J Dilla, Timbaland, & L.Dre.
