We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, how does your business help the community?
My business encourages and uplifts how black women with kinky curly hair see themselves. Teaching black women the skills they never knew on how to take care of their natural hair this effects the black community as a whole. If more black moms loved and understood their natural hair this behavior will be seen by her children. Raising more confident daughters and sons who love and appreciate natural hair. It would train the eye of our men to see us who we are and to embrace our beauty with us. Most women of color dont like natural hair because society and black men put a negative label on it. Even our biracial parents need to understand how to care for their children’s hair. Women around the world with natural kinky hair deserve the opportunity to understand how to care for their hair and feel good about themselves.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Im not just another natural hair stylist. I care about each soul that GOD bless me to touch. my grandmother was a hairstylist, so this was a gift to me. I also received the gift of having hair challenges at a young age that caused me not to get relaxers. Before, I was a professional hairstylist, I was a consumer ,I would get relaxers and unfortunately my hair just couldn’t withstand the chemicals and would break off. The dermatologist told me to stop the relaxers so I did, but after that, I had a series of years of inflammation and alopecia where my hair would fall out all the way to the root. Here I was a professional hairstylist, trying to help other people with healthy hair and I’m having the same problems they were how embarrassing! Once my grandmother had passed away, with research I understood about nutrition, stress and how to manage my lifestyle properly. I wrote my first book. I loved natural hair yet didn’t want to touch a client with natural hair. GOD had other plans and put me in a salon that did natural hair. and I slowly begin to see myself in the chair, and I slowly begin to see that my ladies needed help beyond the chair. They needed to understand how to manage stress they needed to understand nutrition and how to keep their inflammation levels down and they needed to understand how to care for their hair at home so when they came into the salon, they could get that wow factor. It was through my own personal challenges and heartache from my grandmother‘s passing that got me here today being a educator and author to teach black women how to care for their hair. This is not just a job to me. This is my lifestyle. I love what I do. I love helping the women that sit in my chair. My goal is to help them make this a lifestyle as well.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So my bestie loves wine so we will go to Château Elon wine tasting and stay overnight. we will have a private concert in the car, dancing and singing all the way to the spa, getting facials and body massages and don’t forget the feet rub. We love to laugh so we will find a comedy club to go to and then probably go to Pappadeaux‘s.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes my shero, Norma R Stewart my grandmom was my ROCK!!! Because of her love and GOD’s grace why I am who I am today. She was my first example of love and determination. It was very difficult hopelessly watching by as she died of cancer. But, it caused me to dig deeper to discover the correlation between nutrition and hair loss. Due to this I have kept alopecia, dry hair and slow growing hair almost non existing.
