We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsey Bligen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue a creative career because I was heavily influenced by my older cousin. When I was younger, every time I saw her she had a different hairstyle and her makeup made it seem like she was a completely different person. I loved it because it was kind of a guessing game trying to see who she’d be next time we were together. When the pandemic hit, I had a bunch of free time to just practice makeup and hair. Overtime, I began filming videos of the process and seeing the reactions of others and even myself, started to excite me. I’ve been blessed enough to be able to combine my profession of being a daycare teacher with my love of hair and makeup. Now whenever we have holidays, I dress up for the excitement of the kids and it’s the best feeling seeing how in awe they are. It makes me want to do more with my looks.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Something that makes me different from others is that I love to show off how beautiful being different is. After being bullied in elementary school for not following trends and being told I was weird, I heard the word “Anomaly” on a gospel radio show. I decided to make it my name and Chelsey Anomaly was born. I want everyone to embrace their differences, take a trend and bend it all out of shape. Be unconventional and take up as much space as you want. Who cares about coloring within the lines? Some of the worlds most expensive art is just a compilation of messiness.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I were to take someone out in the city, I would start off by having brunch at Sun In My Belly. They have the best shrimp and grits. Yes, brunch because it’s Atlanta. There’s going to be traffic anyways, might as well sleep in. I would HAVE to take them to Puttshack. The drinks are great, I love their employees, and the mini golf definitely gets my competitive side going. By the time we finish with Puttshack, we’d have to get a nice mid afternoon snack. There’s this really great place called the “Farm Fresh Produce Company”. From the outside it looks like an old shack with some produce but they have the best Yellow Jacket hot dogs. The employees are truly sweet country folk who will try to feed you everything. I would recommend everything on their menu especially the yellow jacket hot dog and some Brunswick stew. We’d have to relax for a bit before we begin getting dolled up. There’s a great spot in Mableton called the “The Sky restaurant bar and grill”. Here, you might just find a sugar daddy or momma. If you don’t want one, that’s fine too but be ready to dance your life away and have a Uber ready for when you leave because after the drinks they serve, you will NOT be able to stand straight. Saturday nights are my favorite days to go besides Taco Tuesdays. The crowd is usually older men and women and they are not afraid to kick their shoes off and dance without a care in the world. It’s great as long as you get there early enough to get a table.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to shoutout my best friend, Abrea. Not only does she do an exceptional job at humbling me, but she also helps with my creative process. If I need inspiration, she’s already on it waiting for the chance to give it. When I feel like my makeup or hair is terrible, she’s there hyping me up. When I want to quit, she’s always there pushing me through. I also started learning how to do makeup with her during the pandemic so this is all just an continuation of something we started in our bedrooms mid lockdown.
