We had the good fortune of connecting with DonShae Hurt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DonShae, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Dayton, Ohio. My mom was a single parent and I was the middle child. My environment was very dysfunctional yet I always had goals for a better life. I participated in all types of activities growing up from drill team and dance to drama and acting, softball and cheer. I worked hard to escape my reality. I learned values such as determination, hard work, discipline and empathy. My past experiences contributed to and helped shape my communication skills, critical thinking abilities, problem-solving capabilities, and my ability to connect with patients from diverse backgrounds and provide unbiased high-quality patient care.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have worked in several specialties of nursing. I love talking with people and learning about their thought processes and how their mood affects how they respond. So, I decided to go to grad school for psychiatric mental health nursing and obtain a nurse practitioner license. My professional qualities include empathy compassion, excellent communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and strong problem-solving capabilities. I’m able to connect with patients and understand their needs, and provide effective mental health care that is non-judgmental, and culturally competent.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love getting dressed and going to eat. I absolutely love Asian food. For lunch, I’m a soup and salad, sushi or pho girl! Dinner is all about ambience, good conversation, looking good, feeling good, and of course eating good. I love chicken, seafood, sauces, breads, fruits and vegetables,

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All women who are mothers with careers deserve immense praise for their strength, resilience, and dedication. We face unique challenges and barriers in the workplace and society, yet we continue to excel and succeed in our careers while also caring for our families. Working women are trailblazers, breaking barriers and shattering stereotypes, all while being loving and supportive mothers. The determination, hard work, and perseverance serve as an inspiration to everyone, honestly. Let’s celebrate and uplift the incredible black women and all women who are balancing motherhood and successful careers with grace and determination.
