We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanqing(Lucca) Jiang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanqing(Lucca), why did you pursue a creative career?

The decision to pursue an artistic or creative career stems from my deep love for animation and games since childhood. This passion led me from the field of computer science to the expressive and imaginative world of animation. Deep within me, there is a strong desire to create visual works that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also meaningful. I aim to convey my emotions, stories, and perspectives through these works, hoping to resonate with the audience and achieve self-expression. Furthermore, I aspire for my creations to be recognized and appreciated by others, validating my worth and creativity. Through continuous learning, practice, and exploration, I hope to reach new heights technically while also finding a unique personal style in artistic expression.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Admittedly, I have never formally studied painting; my interest and practice in art were mainly influenced by my family environment. My mother, a skilled Chinese calligrapher, introduced me to the magic of transforming abstract concepts into tangible art from an early age. However, it was not until after university that I realized my true passion lay in art, not abstract coding. I have a knack for materializing abstract ideas and conveying them to others. Beyond completing mandatory assignments, my entire university life was devoted to exploring painting and 3D art.

Now, I am the Art Director and Leader of the 3D department at Dual-x Game Studio, responsible for guiding the artistic direction of our games and managing the team’s deadlines. As a 3D artist, I handle character modeling, texturing, rigging, CFX effects, and some CG rendering and compositing. My journey has taught me that persistent practice is the only shortcut to achieving goals for someone not born a prodigy. It took me eight years to evolve from a novice to an adept in illustration and 3D art.

The establishment of Dual-x Studio was driven by our CEO’s vision to create games that address the injustices faced by women—a cause that resonates deeply with me. After graduation, armed with all my skills and experience, I joined this fledgling company, integrating the knowledge and techniques I had acquired elsewhere. Now, we have already garnered over 3,000 followers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

My favorite spot might just be my bed, as my multiple roles and the constant need to learn new things leave me with no time to venture outside. If I could have a week off, I would choose to lie in bed.

However, if I ever find the time, I would love to take my friends to explore Ruby Falls near Atlanta. The sight of the waterfall there is truly breathtaking and beautiful. It’s hard to believe such a natural wonder exists underground and has been made accessible. After spending two to three days around Ruby Falls, I’d take them to try my favorite beef noodles at 26 Thai Kitchen & Bar in Atlanta Midtown, which tastes incredibly similar to the noodles I used to enjoy back home. For the remaining time, I would show my friends around the city’s architecture, including attractions like the aquarium and the Coca-Cola Company.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my parents for their unwavering support when I changed careers. I also want to give a special thanks to my husband for his steadfast belief in my talents. Additionally, I am immensely grateful to all the SCAD professors and classmates who have supported me on my artistic journey, as well as my colleagues and leaders in my career. Their guidance and encouragement have been invaluable to my growth.
