We had the good fortune of connecting with Lashell McGowan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lashell, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
my main thought process behind starting a business was basically do for self. Since I was young I’ve always noticed how more successful individuals have their own business. Mainly noticing my family members start businesses and watching how successful things can be, I had to go for it as well!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets MajorStatus Kennels apart from others is we have a lot of experience with dogs. (15 + years) Before I even thought about breeding I was always a dog lover. My dad always kept about 10 dogs. All females stayed inside, esp durning breeding time. He treated the dogs like family all the time! Watching him train and discipline the dogs was always the best part for me because it shows how dedicated you are to perfect your craft! And that was a big thing for my dad. The dogs represent us and what we stand for, and that is top quality!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Right now I’m living in Denver,CO. So the 1st stop would have to be food. There’s this black owned restaurant “Saucy Southern” & they have the best food in Denver! They specialize in southern cuisine. 2nd for drinks I would recommend “54Thirty Rooftop”. It’s a nice place if you want to get a good top view of the city & good drinks. 3rd so far as hanging out I would stop by “Tetra Lounge” it’s a black owned lounge where everyone is welcome to come hang & enjoy some good Denver bud. All of these places will definitely be fun places to check out while visiting Denver.

These two play a big role in why I started my business. Following in my dad’s footsteps as a dog breeder was never in the plans! But it ended up being a great idea that would change the way I look at how to start a business. With his experience & knowledge about dogs, he was the perfect person to come to about where I should start.

My mom has more of a business mind when it comes to being professional and productive. I can always reach out to her about how to step up my online presence etc.
