We had the good fortune of connecting with Nefertari Medford Rasaq and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nefertari, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My path down this road has been a combination of knowing what I love to do, knowing what I’m always being asked to help people with because of how I approach my art and the results I produce. I started wondering what it would be like to do what I do so well I could provide my own time and financial freedom. I want my daughters to see me as their first and greatest role model. I want them to move beyond fears and be addicted to growing and learning and actively become who they want to be. I have to do and be those things for myself first in order to show them why and how.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Storytelling as a profession has allowed me to bring my writing, coaching and speaking strengths together to guide both writers and non-writers to their desired results of crafting memoirs and stories out of the impactful and many times hard experiences they have faced.
Resilience is a word I know all too well. Overcoming my own struggles of abuse, becoming a mother and an entrepreneur, has kept me determined to break my family’s negative generational cycles in love, wealth and success. Learning about my own voice, my value to this earth and overall worth has allowed my now clients to benefit from my audacity to not stand in my own way and make sure they see their books through from whatever stage it’s in to the very end.
Every project and client I take on revolves around helping them understand that failure isn’t theirs to hold and that there is beauty in their truth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great spots to visit in the DMV area! I would include a visit to the National Harbor for great vibes during the summer. Dinners would include some upscale restaurants near The Wharf, black-owned hidden gems in Baltimore and too many amazing brunch spots in DC! I love spontaneous trips to NY for Broadway shows but we would definitely be able to experience amazing productions either at Olney Theatre or Round House Theatre! Of course the MLK Memorial is a must as well as The National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout would have to go to Nichelle Medford, my mother. This woman literally trained me to be a communicator. She intricately taught me the power of the truth, the power of a good story and how putting them together empowers self and others to know that they have something to say.
