Meet Kamia McWilliams | Evangelist, Writer & Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamia McWilliams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from a southeast town in Georgia known as Fitzgerald. The region, people, how I grew up impacted who I am today in several ways but most importantly, it has impacted me spiritually and how I view the world. I was raised in the church, we didn’t come from much, but it taught me to appreciate the simplest things in life and has played a big role in who I am. Even with the racial issues and diversity within the community has impacted my appreciate for my people and where I come from and has also struck a curiosity for me, regarding other cultures.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Art has always been a part of who I was, it’s sort of in my DNA. I grew up writing, my grandmother and mother did it, not professionally but it was passed on to me and then photography was something that was just, pretty much a part of me. I’ve always loved art and capturing it since middle school and then when I became older, I self-published a poetry book, that was released during my first Art Exhibit in my hometown. Then, I left college, and I started a photography business, Kamia Portraits. I continue to share my writings, not just poetry but teachings of the Gospel of Jesus through podcast and devotional books and it hasn’t been easy. I’ve overcome every challenge that I’ve faced truly by trusting in God, first. And then admitting that it’s not easy and truthfully, it’ll never be easy. One lesson I’ve learned along the way is, “you’re right where you are supposed to be”. We can get so caught up in what the next person is doing that we miss our “right here, right now” opportunity. This has been one valuable lesson that I’ve learned, to focus on my own race. I want the world to know that my brand(s) represents who I am as a person.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The park and in nature are the place I find the most joy and peace at, so I would take them to Paulk Park, here in Fitzgerald, GA. I would say a great place to eat food, I would definitely suggest traveling a few miles to Tifton, GA to a restaurant called Fresco Italiano or Ms. Motts or Cafe Budapest in Fitzgerald. Then, come to church with me at Burn Culture in Tifton.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this to my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, my children, parents, family & friends, every one of my clients at Kamia Portraits, anyone who has ever supported me in any kind of way, listeners of The Being of Her Podcast and of course my church family Burn Culture in Tifton, Georgia.
