We had the good fortune of connecting with Jack Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jack, how has your background shaped the person you are today?

Growing up as the child of a military family, I experienced frequent relocations. However, I consider Georgia my true home, having lived here for the longest period. The constant moves and the need to forge new friendships each year as a child played a significant role in shaping the person I am today. My formative years on the military base were intriguing, especially as I observed the heightened security measures and the presence of barbed wire fences. These surroundings sparked curiosity in my young mind, making me question what exactly was being safeguarded.

The sole means of leaving the base without official authorization was through the train line. I have vivid memories of exploring the rail cars, captivated by the diverse graffiti adorning them. It was fascinating to witness people proudly representing their different cities through this unique form of expression. However, the turning point that truly caught my attention was when I spotted the iconic “Rocketpower” cartoon from the 90s painted on the side of an auto rack. I was struck with amazement, realizing that it looked even better on a train than on television. This particular encounter marked the inception of my artistic journey.

In summary, growing up as an artist within a highly structured system has significantly influenced the person I am today. The contrast between the regimented military life and the vibrant, expressive world of art has shaped my unique perspective and artistic career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In the art world, I lead a somewhat dual existence. On one hand, my background is deeply rooted in graffiti, while on the other, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. These two aspects are essentially polar opposites. Graphic Design involves creating visually appealing solutions for advertising and problem-solving, following a structured process. On the contrary, graffiti is characterized by a more unstructured approach, with no real right or wrong way to execute it, aside from adhering to unwritten rules that should be respected.

Despite their apparent differences, these two art forms share striking similarities, particularly in the realms of consistency and branding. In Graphic Design, maintaining consistency is essential for effective communication and creating a recognizable brand. Similarly, in the world of graffiti, artists often develop a consistent style or tag that becomes their personal brand, making their work easily identifiable. The parallel between these seemingly disparate artistic expressions highlights the versatility and nuanced nature of creativity.

Despite the challenges, I attribute my current position to my unwavering passion for art, persistent efforts, and a continuous desire for personal growth. Embracing difficulties, taking risks, and learning from mistakes have been instrumental in shaping my journey. The philosophy that “you don’t know until you try” has been a guiding principle, encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone and explore new possibilities. This commitment to artistic development and the willingness to take chances have played a crucial role in bringing me to where I am today.`

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s a bit of a challenge since my friends have diverse lifestyles, interests, and professions. The activities would likely depend on who is visiting. However, a common thread might involve finding a something to paint together and enjoying a meal at a local spot.
