We had the good fortune of connecting with LaKitria Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaKitria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before starting my business, I worked in Corporate America for years moving my way up ranks. As I was promoted, I found myself having to keep my phone close to respond to calls and messages. One day it me when I was baking, why not do my baking full-time? I always had plans to eventually have a Bakery. I decided that if I was willing to work hard to make someone else’s dream come true, just think of what I could do for myself. So, I went for it with the support of my family.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a passionate, self-taught baker and decorator. My training and development background is a big part of who I am because I love to teach others and spread knowledge. Being self-taught has not been easy. I have made many mistakes, but each one has taught me important and memorable lessons. I am always willing to try something new and to keep pushing myself. I never settle, and I consistently welcome uncomfortable situations in order to stretch and develop. For example, I am a natural introvert, but I realize in order to increase my business I can’t let that be a weakness or excuse.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting I would definitely take them downtown to the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke, the Ferris Wheel, and the High Museum. We would attend some type of sporting event, most likely a football or soccer game. We would enjoy nature by going to Piedmont Park, Westside Park, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. We would definitely have to eat, so we would go to the Sundial, Rays on the River, Salata, The Food Terminal, and some other local restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First off, I have to give a shout-out to my entire family and close friends who have supported me and always pushed me to go after my dreams. However, I must give a special shout-out to my Mom LaWanda and my Grandma Daisy. I grew up watching and helping my grandma bake all types of delicious desserts. From those experiences, I developed my passion for baking. My mom has always encouraged and pushed me to do anything I set my mind and heart to. She has always been my biggest supporter. I love you, Mom!!
