We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica James Henry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica James, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance is a concept that has evolved over time, and my own understanding and practice of it has significantly changed through a personal journey of trauma and healing.

After enduring abuse while pregnant, my life was thrown into chaos. I felt the need to constantly keep moving, to stay in a state of flight, to prove to myself that I could overcome all obstacles. This flight response allowed me to stay focused on tasks and work, as productivity became my way of coping with the pain and upheaval in my life.

However, as time went on and I began to heal from the trauma, I realized the importance of finding stillness. I started to recognize that constantly being in flight mode was not sustainable or healthy for my overall well-being. It was merely a trauma response, driven by a fear of falling behind and losing everything again.

I gradually started to embrace the idea of work life balance, understanding that it was not just about dividing my time between work and personal life, but also about finding moments of rest and relaxation amidst the chaos. I learned to trust in the process and have faith that things would work out, even when I allowed myself to pause and take a break.

Today, my balance has shifted towards prioritizing self-care and inner peace. I have come to realize that my worth is not solely defined by my productivity or ability to keep moving. Instead, I find value in the moments of stillness, where I can reflect, recharge, and connect with myself and those around me.

In conclusion, my work life balance has transformed from a constant state of flight to a more balanced approach that incorporates rest, reflection, and trust in the process. Through my personal journey of healing, I have understood the importance of finding stillness and allowing myself to recharge, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the Gulfport beach or to the mobile Alabama downtown area to cycle and eat at restaurants

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to take a moment to dedicate my shout out to my incredible 92 year young grandfather, Aaron Austin. This man has been my rock, my biggest supporter, and my number one fan, even when I made some truly unwise decisions in life.

Whenever I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of which path to take, I knew I could count on my grandfather for sage advice. I would pick up the phone and dial his number, my heart pounding with both fear and hope. And every time, without fail, he would answer and say, “I believe you’re going to get through this, I really do. I believe you’re going to make it.”

It’s not just his comforting words that meant the world to me, but the genuine sincerity behind them. My grandfather never sugarcoated anything or told me what I wanted to hear just to appease me. He always spoke from the heart, giving me the tough but necessary advice that I needed to hear. And throughout it all, I could see the love in his eyes, feel the warmth in his voice, and knew that his support was unwavering.

But it wasn’t just his words that made a difference; my grandfather’s prayers held immense power too. He would intercede on my behalf, asking for guidance and strength, knowing that faith could help me find my way. It was in these moments that I truly understood the depth of his love for me.

Today, I want to thank my grandfather, Aaron Austin, for being my guiding light throughout the ups and downs of life. Your unwavering support, genuine advice, and heartfelt prayers have shaped me into the person I am today. Grandpa, you are a true inspiration, and I am forever grateful for all that you have done for me.
