Meet Nicole Krkljush | Creative Director of Island Hippie Barbados

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Krkljush and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Knowing whether to keep going or to give up can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. Reevaluating is key to moving forward, Things to consider in doing so is your passion, how far you have come and your potential for growth. But ultimately I would say trust your intuition and don’t be afraid to start over if that’s what needs to be done to move forward.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a reflection and celebration of my fascination with being Black. What sets my art apart? The uniqueness of me creating each piece. I will not show it if it looks like shit . “Excuse me ” If it doesn’t evoke what I am feeling. How did I get to where I am today? I have not reach so I cannot tell you yet, what I can say is this….Success is for those that want it. Never give up, keep moving forward and learn from your mistakes.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Barbados has a variety of fun and exciting places to visit. We would head to places like Pebbles Beach, Carlisle Bay, or Accra Beach to relax in the sun or enjoy some water sports. Then I would recommend The St. Lawrence Gap, It’s a lively street which serves has a hub for nightlife, with numerous bars, restaurants, and clubs. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a vibrant party scene.I cannot forget The Oistins Fish Fry on Friday nights, you can get something to eat everyday or night but Oistins really comes alive on Fridays. There you can enjoy street performers, lots of music, dancing and freshly grilled seafood. Then off to some cave exploring at the beautiful Harrison’s Cave for a unique and adventurous hangout, It’s an underground limestone cavern that offers guided tours with a few other attractions. Finally The Mount Gay Rum Distillery . Barbados is known for its rum, and a visit to the Mount Gay Rum Distillery can be educational and fun, with tastings available.

Let me take a moment to express my deep appreciation for the incredible support and understanding my family provide, both in my personal and professional life. I am very fortunate to have them by my side,and I couldn’t imagine a more loving and supportive family. Here’s to you “Guys” Nicia, Niyon, Nariyah, Kas and François.
