We had the good fortune of connecting with Guadalupe Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Guadalupe, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My balance has kind of changed a bit since starting up the business, but I manage. I am a full-time student juggling AP courses, other extracurriculars, and my business, but I always find a way because I LOVE what I do. It’s so much fun and worth it even if I lose some sleep and free time. The way I think about the balance is there is always time for everything as long as you do not procrastinate. I am a bit of a procrastinator myself, but I always make sure to get my work and goals done.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
To begin, I am most proud of this recent set of nurse-themed cakepops I made. I took on a challenge when receiving that order because I have never done anything like it before, but I’m glad I did because they turned out so cute. They were definitely an all-time favorite and have received the greatest number of compliments!
It was not as easy as it seems to get to where I am today, it took a lot of practice and patience; however, I overcame the challenges by learning from my mistakes, being more patient with myself, and thinking strategically.
A lesson I learned is good technique takes time and practice! I have been doing this for over a year now and I am definitely better then when I started. Also, sometimes it is best not to be a perfectionist! A wise person once told me you lose too much time being one and instead you should decide if it is GETMO; which stands for, good enough to move on. This quote really stuck with me, and I will definitely remember it for a long time. It has truly changed the way I think and saved me lots of time contemplating some designs.
Alas, I want the world to know that I am a self-taught Latina cakepopper! I also hope to own a successful shop in the future selling cakepops and coffee and hope to make mi raza proud 🙂
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I could take my best friend on any trip, I would take them to watch a Mexico Men’s National Soccer Team game. I went once and it was truly the experience of a lifetime. I would start off with some Starbucks in the morning, and look for something to wear, maybe even buy face paint. Afterwards, we would go get ready for the game and get there a bit early to be the first few in line. Alas, once we get into the stadium, we would have the time of our lives cheering on Mexico and just hanging out. It truly is a fun environment once you experience it and gives you a core memory.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my dad. He has been very motivational throughout my journey and tells me to never give up or let anything stop me from achieving my dreams. He’s quite supportive and it helps me when I’m feeling down or if a design didn’t go as planned. His words of encouragement are always appreciated! In addition, he told me once that this is all like an airplane. He said airplanes don’t go backward, they go forward, so I should never go back or turn around, I should keep going forward with my business. That definitely stuck with me and I truly appreciate all the support I have received, he may not think it is much, but it is to me 🙂 I definitely hope I can succeed in this business and in the future to make him proud.
