Meet Nury Castillo Crawford | Keynote speaker, Community Strategist, CEO/Founder of 1010 Publishing and Founder of THE little BOOK SPOT

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nury Castillo Crawford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nury, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One aspect of our industry that outsiders might not be aware of is the profound dedication and commitment that small presses like 1010 Publishing, particularly those owned by first-generation immigrants like myself, have to promoting diversity and inclusivity. While larger publishing houses tend to focus on mainstream titles and established authors, smaller presses often serve as the driving force behind emerging voices and marginalized perspectives. We work tirelessly to give a platform to underrepresented authors and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds within our community. Our mission is deeply rooted in promoting diversity, and we’re proud to play a vital role in reshaping the literary landscape to be more inclusive and reflective of our society’s vibrant mosaic.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets 1010 Publishing apart from others is our unwavering commitment to diversity in book publishing. We take pride in our dedication to supporting diverse authors and ensuring that our books are available in multilingual versions, promoting biliteracy and inclusivity. Our “made in America” approach is something we are exceptionally proud of, as it not only showcases our dedication to quality but also supports a network of talented creatives, from authors and illustrators to graphic designers, right here in the USA.
Our journey to where we are today hasn’t been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. We’ve faced challenges in a competitive industry, from navigating distribution hurdles to promoting diverse voices in a market that sometimes resists change. However, our passion for diversity and literacy has been our driving force. We’ve overcome obstacles through persistence, creativity, and a strong network of supporters who share our vision.
Throughout this journey, we’ve learned invaluable lessons about the power of perseverance, the importance of staying true to our mission, and the impact of collaboration. We want the world to know that 1010 Publishing is not just a brand; it’s a commitment to creating a literary landscape that reflects the rich tapestry of our society. We’re here to amplify diverse voices, promote biliteracy, and contribute to a more inclusive literary world. Our story is one of resilience and determination, and we invite everyone to be a part of it as we continue to publish books that reflect the beauty of our diverse nation.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week-long trip to Atlanta, GA promises an eclectic mix of experiences. We would start by grabbing breakfast at West Egg Café, known for its Southern-inspired dishes and cozy atmosphere. Afterward, head to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site to pay tribute to an American icon. Lunch can be enjoyed at The Varsity, an iconic Atlanta institution serving classic fast food. Spend the afternoon exploring the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest in the world, or the Atlanta Botanical Garden for some tranquility.
Evenings in Atlanta can be truly diverse. For dinner, dive into the city’s vibrant food scene at Ponce City Market, offering various dining options within a historic building. I love live music, so we would catch a show at the Fox Theatre, or check out the lively bars and restaurants in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood. For a taste of Atlanta’s craft beer scene, visit Sweet Water Brewing Company.
Before the week passed, we would definitely spend the day on Buford Hwy, where we would find authentic diverse eating spots. We would grab coffee and a baked good at Sweet Hut Cafe, an Asian bakery and eat lunch at Costa Verde Peruvian Restaurant after shopping at Plaza Las Americas, you’ll feel like you’re in Latin America.
Midweek, we will take a trip to the Atlanta History Center to delve into the city’s past, then savor some authentic soul food at Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Spend your evening at the Atlanta Belt Line, a hub of culture and community, perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. Don’t forget to try The Porter Beer Bar for a wide selection of brews.
As the week progresses, we would visit the World of Coca-Cola for a unique soda experience and grab lunch at The Busy Bee Café for more Southern comfort food. Spend your afternoon exploring the trendy neighborhoods of Little Five Points and East Atlanta Village, filled with quirky shops and local art. In the evening, enjoy a dinner at the upscale restaurant, Bacchanalia, and cap off the night with a cocktail at the rooftop bar at Ponce City Market.
We will wrap up our Atlanta adventure with a visit to the High Museum of Art for a dose of culture, followed by lunch at The Silver Skillet, a classic diner. Spend your final afternoon exploring the scenic Piedmont Park, great for a leisurely walk or a picnic. For your last dinner in Atlanta, try the delicious offerings at the Kimball House in Decatur.
Then we would be off to the Atlanta International Airport- which is an adventure all on it’s own.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success is an enduring tribute to my parents, the original dreamers who made the incredible sacrifice of uprooting our family of five from Peru to embark on a new life in the United States. They faced countless challenges and barriers, yet their unwavering determination and selflessness ensured that my siblings and I always felt loved, safe, and respected. Their sacrifice and resilience have been the guiding light of my journey, inspiring me to push beyond my limits and chase my dreams with the same fervor they exhibited when they decided to leave everything behind for a better future. Every achievement I attain is not just a testament to my own hard work but a testament to their enduring love and sacrifices. I dedicate my success to them, the true heroes of my story, and carry forward their legacy of resilience and determination in everything I do.
