We had the good fortune of connecting with Essence Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Essence, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It’s always been essential for me to do something that I am passionate about and that I also enjoy. I’ve worked jobs that I never truly felt spoke to my passion and purpose. My business Raw Essence Detox and Wellness was birthed during covid19 because I felt the calling and there was and still is a strong need in the black community in the United States for holistic wellness practices that will lead to breakthroughs from generational trauma and curses, lifestyle diseases, and depression. I was living abroad in Thailand at the time when I decided that I wanted to take the leap and begin my Holistic Health Business. I’ve found my own peace, healing, and joy while on my own holistic journey. Fasting has been one of the main beneficial factors in transforming my life, in regards to my way of thinking and experiencing the world, and my overall mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Different methods such as sound bath healing, meditating and breathwork, juice and smoothie detoxing have been transformational in my life. These are things I was eager to bring to my family and friends, as well as the black community in Atlanta, Georgia.

What should our readers know about your business?
Raw Essence Detox and Wellness offers cold-pressed juice detox packages, wellness consultations and coaching, wellness workshops, and detox programs. I look at wellness and health from a holistic perspective. Health isn’t just about nutrition, its about our mind, body, spirit, and emotions. We are constantly taking in toxins from the air, the food, the water, othe people, technology, and social media each day. Too many people in the black community are suffering from chronic disease and depression due to unhealed emotional trauma and a lack of food and nutrition knowledge. As a holistic health coach, my goal is to help others to prevent a lifestyle of sickness and to promote a lifestyle of wellness by providing the tools that reinforce a healthy relationship with eating, the knowledge that healing begins within, and to dispel the notion that chronic diseases are part of a generational curse that runs in the family. Optimal health and vitality do not have the be out of reach just because of maturity in age, tradition, or lack of knowledge. My late great grandmother had diabetes and my grandmother suffers from different internal ailments all stemming from the food that they’ve made a ritual of consuming. Taking pharmaceutical drugs that cover up the symptoms of the problem will never be the answer. Really tuning in and getting to the root cause of sickness and dis-ease is the answer. The clarity, the joy, the peace, the happiness, the prosperity, the abundance, and the growth that I’ve experienced have come from instilling daily habits and rituals of self care and love. From my own experiences eliminating meat, fried foods, sugary drinks, junk food, and alcohol from my diet has eliminated extra weight, feelings of depression, fatigue, acne and breakouts, mental brain fog and uncertainty, immune system issues, and excessive menstrual pain and bleeding. After replacing those foods with fresh whole natural foods like (vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, legumes, smoothies and fresh juices) and including fasting, detoxing, yoga, breathwork, and meditation, into my lifestyle rituals I gained clarity about my passion and purpose in life, I slimmed down, I feel vibrant and joyful, my skin is glowing and clear, and I do not feel weighed down by external forces. Eating cooked and processed foods put a major strain on our digestive system that’s why I am an advocate for fasting and adopting other holistic health practices. I’ve learned that optimal health and wellness begins within. I made it my mission to begin cultivating discipline in my own life in order to live a wellness lifestyle. Making daily lifestyle changes that led me to live a more balanced, intentional, vibrant, and balanced life. I’ve been walking this walk since 2014 making my own fresh juice and smoothies. Back then people were always asking me to start selling but I wasn’t in a mental space to begin. I didn’t have full confidence in myself the way that I do now. I wanted everything to be perfect and if it wasn’t exactly how I envisioned it in my head then I wouldn’t do it. I had to get over that whole idea of it having to be perfect and really just starting. You don’t have a business until you make your first sale. When I began selling my first product, my Raw Essence Smoothies I reached out to families and friends to see who would be interested in my services. People began recommending me to other people, they felt would be interested. I asked for people to invest in the growth of my business products and offerings in order for me to begin offering cold-pressed juices. I have received a phenomenal amount of support and loyal customers that have made this all worth it. People truly have a desire to be healthy and sometimes it takes familiarity and an extra push to lead people on this wellness path. The nutrients in my Raw Essence Cold Pressed juices have miraculous benefits to our overall health. These vital nutrients and vitamins fuel the body with essential micronutrients that fight disease, aid in eliminating waste and bloating, alleviating menstrual pain and bleeding, leading to an increase in energy, and radiant glowing skin.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Tassili’s Raw Reality in the West End of Atlanta is the perfect “SoulFull” place in the city. It offers a unique experience for those seeking to try the raw kale wraps (Punany and Mandigo wraps), experience the healing temple for yoga and breathe work, and meet other people on the path of wellness. It’s a Raw Vegan spot that is loved by people who eat meat and people who don’t. I met the owner, Tassili Maat, in my second year of college while working on my Thesis “Veganism as Activism in the Black Community.” She inspired me so much that she became the center of my project. The work that she is doing and has done truly sparked a fire in me for the power of raw foods for healing and nourishment. The Roswell Mill waterfall is also an amazing place to just get away from people, hike, and be one with nature. If you want to put down the technology for a while and just relax outdoors it’s the perfect place for meditation, yoga, and tuning in with self.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother Michelle Roberts is the strongest and most driven woman that I have ever met. As a single mother of 3 kids, she has always put her children first and encouraged us to live the life that we desire. Throughout my entire life, she has instilled in us the benefits of having multiple streams of income, being independent, building our skills, networking, and finding our joy and happiness. Michelle Roberts is a hustler and a go-getter, period! I’ve witnessed my mother embark on different business ventures over the years, work jobs out of state, and still come home cook and provide for her family. My mother made sure that my brother, sister, and I never wanted for anything our entire life. If there ever were any financial issues that she faced, they were never mentioned to us or put on our back. These are moments and experiences that I am grateful for. My mother is an author, a public speaker, an entrepreneur, a Soulf Food Chef, and an IT professional. She wears many hats and struts proudly in her divinity. She’s a woman of faith who knows who she is, what she wants, and the steps to get there. My mother has always motivated me to strive for whatever I desired growing up, in college, and as an adult. She supported me as I embarked on my journey to go teach and live abroad in Shanghai, China. She invested in my business and professional growth and development. She wants to see all of her children win. That’s the support and motivation that I believe everyone desires from their family but not everyone has the privilege to have. I have always known that my family isn’t like others, and I always am in a state of gratitude for the family that I have been blessed with.
