We had the good fortune of connecting with Keymari Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keymari, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was a little girl, I was always drawn to the arts. Growing up in a divided household, I witnessed firsthand the challenges and sacrifices my parents made to provide for our family. We didn’t have many material possessions or extravagant experiences, but what we did have was an abundance of love, resilience, and creativity. In the midst of our modest lifestyle, I found solace and inspiration in the world of arts. I was captivated by the ability of music, paintings, literature, and performances to transcend the limitations of our circumstances and transport us to a realm of boundless imagination and possibility. The arts became my sanctuary, a place where I could express myself freely and explore my emotions. I could communicate my deepest thoughts and feelings without any barriers or judgments. It allowed me to process the complexities of life, and in turn, provided me with a sense of empowerment and liberation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

As a filmmaker and actress dedicated to creating more representation in film and theatre for people of color (POC) and the next generation of young black girls, my art stands out for its transformative storytelling and the positive impact it generates. I take pride and find excitement in the ability to showcase diverse narratives, challenge stereotypes, and inspire underrepresented communities. Overcoming challenges along the way, I have persevered by surrounding yourself with a supportive network, seeking mentorship, and continually refining my craft. Through my work, I have learned the power of storytelling as a catalyst for change, promoting empathy and fostering a more inclusive society. Above all, I want the world to know that I’m committed to empowering POC and young black girls, demonstrating that anything is possible and that their stories deserve to be heard and celebrated.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a week-long trip in Atlanta to show my best friend the best time ever, I would plan an exciting itinerary that encompasses a mix of cultural experiences, culinary delights, and outdoor adventures. Here’s a snapshot of the highlights:

Day 1: After a hearty Southern breakfast at The Flying Biscuit Café, we would start by exploring the vibrant neighborhoods of Atlanta, such as Little Five Points and Virginia-Highland, known for their unique shops, art galleries, and eclectic vibes. We would have lunch at Ponce City Market, a bustling food hall with a variety of cuisines. In the evening, we’d catch a live performance at the historic Fox Theatre.

Day 2: We would dedicate this day to Atlanta’s rich history and culture. We would visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, which includes his childhood home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church. In the afternoon, we’d head to the Atlanta History Center to learn about the city’s past. In the evening, we’d enjoy dinner and live music in the lively Buckhead district.

Day 3: It’s time for some outdoor adventure! We’d start the day by hiking the scenic trails at Stone Mountain Park and take in the breathtaking views from the top. Afterward, we’d visit the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest in the world, and be amazed by its incredible marine life. In the evening, we’d dine at The Optimist, renowned for its seafood, and enjoy cocktails at the rooftop bar, Polaris.

Day 4: A day dedicated to sports and entertainment. We’d tour the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC, to get a behind-the-scenes look at the state-of-the-art facility. Afterward, we’d explore the College Football Hall of Fame, an interactive museum celebrating the sport’s history. In the evening, we’d catch a Braves baseball game at Truist Park.

Day 5: Time to unwind and indulge in Atlanta’s culinary scene. We’d start with a leisurely brunch at West Egg Café, known for its Southern-inspired fare. We’d spend the day exploring the Atlanta BeltLine, an urban trail connecting parks, neighborhoods, and public art installations. For dinner, we’d savor innovative farm-to-table cuisine at Staplehouse, followed by drinks at the trendy Krog Street Market.

Day 6: A day trip to the charming city of Decatur, located just east of Atlanta. We’d stroll through its vibrant downtown area, browse unique boutiques, and enjoy lunch at The Iberian Pig, offering delicious Spanish tapas. In the afternoon, we’d visit the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, known for its exhibits on dinosaurs and ancient civilizations. Back in Atlanta, we’d end the day with a visit to the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s stunning light show, Garden Lights, Holiday Nights.

Day 7: On the final day, we’d venture to the Atlanta Zoo, home to a diverse array of animals and a favorite among visitors. Afterward, we’d explore the trendy shops and eateries in the hip neighborhood of East Atlanta Village. We’d conclude the trip with a celebratory dinner at Bacchanalia, a renowned fine dining restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine.

Of course, Atlanta has so much more to offer, but this itinerary provides a mix of cultural, culinary, outdoor, and entertainment experiences to give my best friend a memorable and enjoyable visit.
