We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalys Macon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dalys, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in the Republic of Panama. I truly feel like I had the best of both worlds. I grew up in the Panama Canal Zone on US Territory to creative parents and grew up bilingual in a very close-knit community. I also had the influence of West Indian grandparents, so my exposure to various cultures was always present.

My upbringing created in me a desire to bridge gaps and help others and it is very evident in my life today. My exposure to various cultures and backgrounds provided a comfort in making connections. My parents instilled fairness and standing-up for the benefit of others. Black Girls Who Organize (BGWO) started as a way for blacks and other minority Professional Organizers, who remain underrepresented, to receive recognition for their gifts and contributions to the Organizing community. Serving others in this community has truly impacted who I am today.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the Founder of D’VINE ORDER, LLC, a professional organizing and styling company. I am also the Founder of Black Girls Who Organize (BGWO) platform on Instagram, dedicated to spotlighting blacks and other minorities Professional Organizers. Balancing two platforms that have done relatively well creates proud moments but is also humbling.

What sets me apart at D’VINE ORDER is my ability to infuse color and style. Beyond Organizing, I have the ability to design functional spaces and simplifying lifestyles. It is always my goal to create spaces that truly represent the client while providing them simple systems that they can maintain. I am most proud of the fact that I launched my business in my 50s; most of my colleagues are 15 to 20 years younger. As for BGWO, I set-out to feature one Organizer a month for a year, in the first year, that number grew to 50 and to date I have featured 175+ ladies. It is still mind-blowing that I am now hosting Retreats for our BGWO Community and have earned the respect of so many in our industry because of this community.

In the moments I felt like giving up, the Lord always placed the right individuals in my life to support, encourage and help reinstate my purpose. I launched my business without an Instagram account, a website or business know-how. While it wasn’t easy, I learned little by little and figured things out as I went along. I know greater is coming. My advice: Tune-out distractions and surround yourself with people who build, not tear down. “Don’t think you have to have it all figured out before you start,” remember you can “Do it afraid” because God has not giving me (you) a spirit of fear. 2 Tim 1:7

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve lived in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) for close to 40 years, and while I prefer warmer climates, the endless activities, places to eat and hang out choices outweighs the cold. Being in the Nation’s Capital provides access to visit many museums and historical monuments –a day or night time view of the city at the Navy Yard is beautiful. From the U.S. Capitol, the White House, the Monument, to the MLK and Lincoln Memorial; walking the Mall and taking in the history is a must. There are too many Museums to mention, but my favorites are The National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum to view art from around the globe. H Street in DC is designed for night-life.

A lunch or dinner cruise on the Potomac River is always a treat, especially in the spring when the Cherry Blossom trees are in full bloom. Any restaurants serving seafood, especially Maryland crab cakes ranks high on the list, however, a visit to the DC Wharf, National Harbor on Prince George’s County, MD waterfront offers everything from entertainment, shops, restaurants, and hotels including the Gaylord and the MGM offering a casino and great live entertainment. There are often available performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and free summer concert series in neighboring parks. If sports is your thing there are professional baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey games to attend. The Salamander Hotel and Resort in the Virginia suburbs is top notch especially for spa services.

Since I am always interested in supporting small businesses, there are many to support including Somewhere Cafe and Retail in DC, the Furlough Cheesecake and Mahogany Books at the National Harbor.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am beyond blessed and have so many strong individuals who have supported, loved and encouraged me. My parents instilled strong values in me. I am fortunate to have various tribes of friends, some I’ve known since childhood, some met during early adulthood, some while serving in the U.S. Air Force and others during my career as a Government contractor for 30+ years. Kudos to my Spiritual Sis*stars who were present through highs and challenges and who’ve encouraged me every step of the way during my life journey. Last but definitely not least, my family, especially my husband Derrick and sons Dominick and Darius. They love, support and encourage me in running my business and continuing my community service. They are my why.

It goes without saying, that the ladies at Black Girls Who Organize (BGWO) provide an extra level of support, love and encouragement. Since BGWO’s inception three years ago, it has been awe inspiring to watch and see the growth each of these women CEOs have brought to the group collectively. Thanks to all Pro Organizers in our Organizing community who support BGWO. A special shout-out to Shira Gill for her support and special feature in the Organized Living book scheduled for release this October; that’s a strong actionable support to the entire BGWO Community.
