Meet Lauren and Tyler Stanley | Owners, Terminus Moving

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren and Tyler Stanley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren and Tyler, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Since having kids our work/life balance has evolved quite a bit. I personally have been self-employed almost the entire time we’ve had kids and balance has changed and evolved quite a bit in that time. Our kids are 6 and 7 now. So, they’re relatively independent compared to where they were as infants. In the beginning work/life balance was basically structured by the needs of the babies. One of us always had to be devoting nearly 100% of our attention to the kids. During that time work happened either when the other partner was able to watch the kids or when they were sleeping. Lauren and I have always valued family time have made family trips and vacations a priority as long as the kids have been alive. The balance has changed some now that the kids are older in that we have to consciously make the decision to put down work from time to time and focus on the kids and each other. This is even more important during the summer while the kids are out of school. Otherwise they end up staring at a screen all day long or fighting with each other. I have to remind myself often that they are the reason why we are working so hard to build this business and none of it is worth anything if we aren’t enjoying time with them now while they’re growing up.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been somewhat “unconventional”, to say the least. I’ve been working in some capacity since about 10 years old. But, I started my first “real” job was aboard the U.S.S Cleveland when I was 18. I joined the Navy right out of high school and shipped off to San Diego to board the ship right after boot camp. After my 4-year enlistment I stayed in San Diego and worked part-time jobs while attending junior college on the GI-BILL. Eventually I moved back to Atlanta and completed my bachelors degree at Georgia State University while bartending and managing a bar in the Old Fourth Ward.
When Lauren and I met, I had been working in that bar for 7-8 years and was looking for a change. Lauren convinced me to get my real estate license and I have to say that was maybe the best advice anyone has ever given me. Once licensed, I hit the ground running, learning as much as I could about how to be the best real estate agent I could be. The transformation that happened in me personally and professionally during those first few years as a real estate agent is the thing I’m most proud of in relation to my career.
Now, being the owner of a moving company, having the opportunity to serve customers in a different way and the opportunity to provide jobs for our employees is a whole new and exciting adventure.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We live on the westside of town, so I would definitely take them to the Battery and to a Braves game if it’s baseball season. Lauren knows about all of the cool food spots in town, so I would leave the meal arrangements up to her. I don’t drink, but I would probably take my friend to some of the breweries around town. Dr. Scofflaw at The Works is a pretty cool place to hang out and not too far from where we live. If they’re bringing kids we would go checkout the aquarium, the zoo and World Of Coke.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d say one of the people who we have leaned on a great deal from the very beginning is Lauren’s dad Gary Barnett. Even as we were formulating the concept and model for the business, we spent a lot of time on the phone and in person with Gary running ideas by him. Gary is a very analytical, process and data driven person with years of experience building and operating businesses. Not only is he a successful entrepreneur, he’s also a straight shooter. We trust Gary’s advice not only because he’s family, but also because we know he’ll be honest with us.
