We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamika Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamika, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
You know, being in an artistic career is something that resonated with me deep inside, even as a child, long before I knew all the different possibilities out there. I remember being enrolled in dance classes at the age of four, and I thought maybe that was it—maybe that was my calling. But then I discovered the world of design and realized that interior or fashion design could be my path. One thing was clear from the start: math was not my strong suit, so I knew that wasn’t the direction for me.

I even dabbled in biology because it came naturally to me, but I’ll never forget what a guy I was dating said to me at the time. He asked, “…but Tamika, do you want to wear scrubs every day?” Now, on the surface, it was a superficial question, but it held a deeper meaning for me. It made me ponder whether I saw myself in a hospital or a lab every day, and the truth was, I didn’t. Instead, I envisioned myself wearing what I wanted, expressing myself through my style, all while being at work.

I share all of this to emphasize that there was always a magnetic pull within me, guiding me towards this creative path. I tuned into that pull and followed it, despite the numerous deterrents along the way. Something deep down always drew me towards the realm of creativity, and eventually, I mustered the courage to take multiple risks and ended up where I am today—happily immersed in the world of Costume Design. It’s amazing how following that inner calling can lead you to a place of fulfillment and contentment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
You know, throughout my journey, I’ve come to truly understand that your work speaks volumes about who you are as a person. It’s not just about the skills and abilities you bring to the table, but also the dedication, passion, and ethical approach you have towards your job. And let me tell you, when you’re starting out as a designer or costumer, this becomes even more crucial.

If I could offer some advice to those stepping into this field, I’d emphasize the importance of your attitude towards your work. Trust me, people will remember that more than anything else. Even when mistakes happen (and they will), it’s how you handle them and find solutions that leaves a lasting impression.

One thing I’ve learned is that maintaining a positive and humble demeanor can take you far. I’ve seen it firsthand—I’d choose someone with an amazing attitude over someone who’s technically perfect but spreads negativity any day. It’s all about creating a supportive and inspiring environment.

You know, I recently worked with an actor who told me, “I miss your energy,” and it warmed my heart. That’s exactly how I want to be remembered—not just for the work I do, but for the positive impact I have on the people around me. It’s about bringing that vibrant energy to everything I do and making a difference in the lives of others.

Let your passion, integrity, and enthusiasm shine through, and you’ll leave a legacy that extends far beyond the job itself.

I’m thrilled to share my excitement about an upcoming project I had the opportunity to work on last summer—Twisted Metal for the Peacock Network, which is based on the popular video game. Collaborating with the talented costume designer Liz Vastola was an absolute delight, and the entire experience turned out to be incredibly fulfilling. What makes it even more special is the remarkable cast, including Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz. Set in the post-apocalyptic early 2000s, this project promises to be a thrilling ride. So mark your calendars because it’s all set to air on July 27th, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the result of our hard work!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Atlanta, I would plan an exciting itinerary to show them the best of what the city has to offer. I live in East Point so I’d be sure to include lots of neighborhood delights. Here’s a week-long trip filled with great food, vibrant nightlife, scenic hikes, and cultural experiences:

We’ll kick off the trip by visiting the West End Brewery, a popular spot known for its craft beers and vibrant atmosphere. We’ll enjoy some delicious brews and enjoy one of the many markets they have going on there.

For dinner, we’d head to a local gem in College Park, like Brake Pad or Chairs Upstairs for classic pub food.

Day 2: Exploring Atlanta’s Gems

For lunch, we’d stop by Krog Street Market, and indulge in a variety of delicious flavors.

In the evening, we’d venture to Piedmont Park, a beautiful urban park in the heart of the city. We can have a picnic, play frisbee, or simply relax and soak in the picturesque views.

Day 3: Cultural Exploration and Nightlife

We’d start the day by visiting the High Museum of Art, located in Midtown. We’ll immerse ourselves in captivating exhibitions and appreciate the works of renowned artists. If it’s the first Friday of the month, we’ll hang around to dance at High Frequency Fridays.

Day 7: Farewell and Farewell Feast

As our week-long adventure draws to a close, we’ll celebrate with a memorable dinner at The Optimist, a beloved seafood restaurant in Atlanta. Known for its inviting coastal atmosphere and delectable menu, The Optimist offers a perfect setting for our farewell feast. We’ll indulge in a feast of fresh seafood dishes, from succulent oysters to mouthwatering grilled fish, savoring the flavors and toasting to the wonderful memories we’ve created together.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
You know, when it comes to my career, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my incredible support system—my mom, my family, and even my close friends. They’ve been there for me every step of the way, always pushing me forward and lifting me up. Even though my mom had her worries and concerns about me diving into freelancing, she never once discouraged me or got angry. Instead, she silently fretted while wholeheartedly backing me up.

Now, let me tell you, the costume industry can be a tricky one. It’s like a sign of success when you see people coming out of the woodwork, trying their best to throw obstacles in your path or make things more complicated. But, the universe has this funny way of showing me that everything falls into place. There have been moments and experiences that have shone a light on my journey, reassuring me that I’m exactly where I need to be.

After pouring my heart and soul into this profession for a solid 15 years, I can confidently say that there’s a tight-knit group of colleagues who have become like family to me. They’re the ones who provide unwavering support, no matter what. And let me tell you, having that kind of support network within the industry—it’s priceless. It’s like having your own little tribe that cheers you on, lifts you up, and helps you navigate the twists and turns of this creative world.
