We had the good fortune of connecting with Raquel M R Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raquel M, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My process began with a dream. A dream that told the story of real people living in fear and that often hide who they are to simply survive. The birth of TRANSworld Atlanta was born through that dream. As a writer, I’m constantly writing but this project was special. As a filmmaker my dream is to create content that will save lives or at least start the conversation of what a better life consists of. TRANSworld is just that; a documentary that is our reality. The show journeys through the life of four transgender men living in Atlanta. I feel it’s past time that we become a more inclusive country and truly stand behind equality for all.

I called my friend Malik and shared with him my vision. I asked for his help with pulling together a strong cast that was ready to share their stories. We met and the rest is now history in the making. While I birthed TRANSworld Atlanta Malik was an intricate part of delivering the TV Series.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an African American female writer and director my personal experiences guide my writing and stories. Representation matters and there is a lack of representation in the film industry. It hasn’t been easy navigating being an independent filmmaker but I’m inspired daily by those like Tyler Perry and Viola Davis. We hear “no” so often in this business so it’s important that you build a thick skin to tolerate hearing “no”. No simply means not right now!

I envision using every word that I write and every scene that I shoot to speak the truth. This is my secret to writing and what excites me the most. Every day is on the job training. I take advantage of working with veteran writers and directors every opportunity I have. I also study the craft of writing; I’m constantly learning. Where I am today is solely because I’m willing to do what it takes to move forward as a writer and director. I take the bumps and bruises gracefully. I would tell any aspiring writer and filmmaker to keep going because there is light at the end of the tunnel. The only way to get to that light is to keep moving.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to recognize my cast for being brave. It’s not always easy being your most authentic self in a world that’s filled with hatred. The world has become a harsh place but because of you all it will become a better place. Your stories will save the lives of young and old people.

TRANSworld Atlanta wouldn’t be possible without each of you. I’m humbled to be behind the scenes delivering to the world your stories. You are brave, beautiful, and your life matters.
