Meet Mykhecia Perry | Hairstylist and Chef

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mykhecia Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mykhecia, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Being in the beauty/hair industry many people have misconstrued it to be, easy, fast money or doesn’t take much effort to be successful. They assume it’s easier than having a normal 9-5 corporate or retail job. When in fact it’s the opposite, this industry is not easy to be in, like other businesses you have to sacrifice a lot, especially your time. They are extremely early mornings, and late nights. Trying to juggle clients, inventory/stock, social media upkeep while maintaining excellent customer service hopefully 24/7 is a lot for one person to do and manage sometimes. Being in this industry has many rewards but behind closed doors can be stressful if not balanced accordingly. People’s misconceptions of the beauty world is what separates the business owners who actually have a passion for what they do and those who think it’s something easy to make money from.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a former competitive dancer, I appreciate hairstyling as another form of art! The way I can manipulate and mold hair to look a certain way creates a sight to see! My favourite part of my daily clients is seeing their final reaction to the hair, and how much they love it. That’s what helps to push me into another day, my clients, their reactions and knowing, I helped to brighten someone’s day by styling their hair! To get where I am was definitely not easy. Extremely early mornings, to when the sun comes up. If I’m awake and can take a clients whether it be 9am or 1am my clients know they can call me to get them right, every time ! I love being accessible to my clients when they may need me. There have been many sleepless nights where I wanted to give up but my clients and supporters is what keep me going. Has the past 3 years been easy? No. Worth it? Yes, I would do it all over again because without the highs AND the lows I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be MYMYDIDMYHAIR. Over the years through my set backs I’ve learned not every loss will hold you back but be a lesson to propel you forward. I want to world to know MYMY is coming and they should be prepared to see my Beauty Salons coming to soon a location near them! Chase your dreams, a loss is a lesson. Never count yourself out!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting me in Toronto on our itinerary for food would be Pur and Simple for a delicious brunch, my mom’s restaurant Kisha’s Tropical Cuisine for Jamaican food (which is usually the first place my friends go), and to please our sweet tooth Jack and Jill’s bake shop! For activities we’d probably visit an art expo being shown the week of their visit, go to a Raptors, or Blue Jays game , and hit up Scooters indoor roller rink for a fun night out. To end our nights we’ll grab a small bite and drinks at Offworld Bar or Daisy. The thing about Toronto is that there are so many hidden gems that you can find by just exploring the city and not just googling where something might be. That’s my favourite thing to do, explore the city especially with my friends who may come from out of town! The best thing about Toronto is being able to explore such diverse cultures within the city right in front you.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give my mom Kisha Perry owner of Kisha’s Tropical Cuisine her flowers for playing and instrumental role in my journey to the business women I am and continuing to grow into. Watching her go from a line cook, to head chef and then owning her own restaurant has been amazing to witness. She has shown me the sacrifice and effort it takes to own and maintain your business and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to learn first hand at what it takes because of her.
