We had the good fortune of connecting with Maurice Cherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maurice, what role has risk played in your life or career?
One of my favorite sayings is “fortune favors the bold,” and I think that definitely plays into how I’ve shaped my career over the past 20 years. I have followed my passions throughout my career, which means I haven’t really followed a linear path to success. I have worked in publishing, education, tech, media, design, and even founded and ran my own studio for over a decade. I would not have been able to pursue opportunities in all of these industries without being comfortable with taking risks.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
This is a little confusing, and there are a lot of questions here, so I’ll just answer each one individually. I’m assuming these will all be listed separately in the interview.

> Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others,

I have been working and creating projects and other content online for well over 20 years, so that definitely sets me apart from a lot of other creators. My most well-known projects have been about showcasing and uplifting other Black people who create content online, so I think that sets me apart as well.

> what you are most proud of or excited about.

I’m most proud of Revision Path, a platform I created in 2013 that showcases Black designers, developers, and digital creatives from all over the world. I’ve been able to talk to people all over the world, and the podcast is the first one to be accepted into the Smithsonian’s permanent archive for the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

> How did you get to where you are today professionally.

Hard work and sacrifice.

> Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?

No, it wasn’t easy! (If it was easy, everyone would do it!) Like I said before, hard work and sacrifice helped me get to where I am today.

> What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.

There are a lot of tools and methods out there to accomplish what you’re trying to do. While it’s good to try things out, eventually you need to find the tools which work best for you and build a system with that tools that works best for your process. Also, hire an accountant as soon as you can and keep your money straight.

> What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

I want people to know that there’s folks like me that have been around since the early EARLY days of the World Wide Web in the 90s and have seen and experienced a lot and are still out here and doing dope and amazing things. They deserve your support!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta’s changing so much, and honestly, since the pandemic a lot of my old haunts are gone. So if someone was visiting for the week, we’d spend the time exploring the city, mostly avoiding the touristy spots (Lenox, PCM, Atlantic Station).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There hasn’t been any one specific person that I would attribute my career success towards; rather, I’ve had friends, family, colleagues, and other people over the years who have helped support me in many different ways for many different reasons.
