We had the good fortune of connecting with Raven Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raven, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve been writing my thoughts down since I was a child. I can find diary entries from when I was as young as 10 years old. With that being said, poetry came natural to me from a very young age. I always loved reading, writing, and music. On another note, I played basketball from the time I was 7 years old until my sophomore year of college. Once I stopped playing ball, I wanted to explore my creative side a bit deeper. Letting go of basketball was a difficult, but necessary, decisions. I decided to take everything that I learned from basketball and apply it to my creative pursuits.

I tried my hand at modeling, poetry, reiki, and music and I fell in love with all of them. I love the way my mind, body, and soul lights up when I finish a poem, a song, a photoshoot, or anything creative; it’s what I live for. It brings me joy to create. It brings me joy to heal myself and assist others in healing themselves through creation. I know I’m here to bring everything that is inside of me, out. All things creative give me the opportunity to do that.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve written a poetry book entitled “In A World of Consciousness”. This work of art is more than just a book. It works as a guide through the inner workings of the mind and spirit. Recently I realized that my poetry is messages from my higher self which are sent to affirm me. Once this book was placed into the hands of others, they enthusiastically told me that this book has helped them heal their mind and soul. They said it became their daily guide for affirmation and direction. I am so proud of this masterpiece and thankful to have completed it. My goal is to uplift and inspire.

I’ve learned to do the things that come natural and easy to me so that I can share those gifts with the world. I didn’t always think that way. I had tor realize that just because something comes easy to me, it doesn’t mean that it comes easy to everyone. This is the exact reason why it is a gift that is to be shared. I was always told that when God reveals your gift to you, you should share it, otherwise you will lose it.

It wasn’t always easy for me to share my gifts. Honestly, I still get nervous when I perform or share something that I’ve created. At first, I was afraid to perform but I fought through it. The rush that I get after diving head first into my fears is what keeps me going. I want people to understand that the things that you are afraid of are the exact things that will take you to your next level. I overcome fears and challenges by facing them head on.

I’ve dealt with a lot of fear and anxiety. My art helps me to soothe it. I love seeing my growth and progress play out in my craft and creations. I am truly grateful to God for the gifts that are instilled in me.

Consistency is key. I got to where I am today by facing my fears and following my heart. Over the last few years I’ve been able to pinpoint the things about me that stayed the same through all the change. Staying in tune with those things have helped me to get to know myself on a deeper level and gain a better understanding of my own personal values. This helps me to discover more of the gift that is my individuality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s a bamboo forest with a beautiful body of water alongside of it that I love going to. Being in nature is one of my favorite things to do so I’d definitely want to take them there. I would recommend eating with The Tasty Plant Based Kitchen. The food is amazing. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a plant-based eater, you’d still really enjoy their food. I would also visit The Zen Bar which is a Chakra Juice Bar and Holistic Healing Spa (the first of it’s kind might I add). The smoothies are aligned to each chakra and are designed to bring healing and balance. The Zen Bar is where I book my reiki clients and visitors can also get foot detoxes, facials, yoni steams, and more.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family is so supportive of me and I’m so thankful for them. My parents, sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. They all have been there for me in such amazing ways. Also, my college friends that I’m still very close with today. They know who they are. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their love and genuine support.
