We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmaine Sumpter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmaine, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
For the longest, my family has always looked at me as the risk-taker out of the group . Whether it be in my personal life or in my career. The funny thing is, I never looked at myself as a risk taker, I looked at it as taking advantage of every opportunity presented to me. Before taking a “risk”, I weigh my options (pros and cons) and I make the best decision possible. This year, I have taken many risks such as moving from South Carolina to Atlanta and starting a new job. Also, I decided this was the best time to invest in myself and take my business seriously, because the opportunities in ATL are endless.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Getting to where I am now, was not an easy road to go down. It took a lot of self-reflecting and learning to know what I wanted out of life. I went to school and received my Bachelors and Master’s in education and even though I loved teaching, I just felt that I could be doing more. It was about two years ago when I purchased my first camera, a Canon EOS M50 and I didn’t know anything about how to use a camera. Being that I was a teacher, I would make sports reels and highlights for all the teams and post them on our social media pages. I eventually fell in love with what I was doing. From recording the content to editing it on Adobe premiere pro. I taught myself a lot by using youtube. I was enrolled in youtube university when it came to using Adobe. Over time, I was eventually getting booked by other sports teams and local brands started reaching out to me to create content and run their social media pages. Once I realized that I was actually good at what I did, I realized that there was little to no opportunity for me to grow in SC and if I wanted to take my craft seriously, I would have to move. Moving to ATL was one of the best decisions I have made. Since moving here, I secured positions with business managing/creating content for their social media platforms and I have created lasting friendships with people that want to help me grow. Also, I have networked with people who share the same craft as me and they have taught me stuff along the way. Being that I am an open-minded learner, sets me apart from others because I am willing to learn and take criticism to better my craft. My brand is only destined to get better and I am ready for whatever God has in store for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being that I just moved to ATL my list is a little short. If I had to take my best friend to my favorite restaurant here, I would take them to Louisiana Bistro. I am in love with seafood so this would be at the top of my list. As far as something fun, since they are visiting ATL, I would take them to cascade or the Trap museum.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout out to my family, for the love and support they have given me thus far. I also want to shout out the person who got me interested in photography and videography, Khalil Sumpter. Without Khalil pushing me, I would’ve stayed in front of the camera modeling instead of being behind it.
