We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Hevesi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Since my younger years, I have known I wanted to be in the helping profession. Being an empathetic helper has always been a defining characteristic of mine. When I chose the route of mental health therapist, I quickly set my sites on having my own practice. I dreamed of a place where people would feel comfortable and safe, and refuge through the highs and lows of life. From my time in graduate school and through my first jobs in the field, I always had my eye on my end goal. I learned from others in various ways and even joined a group practice to learn more. I come from an entrepreneural family, and my husband and I have our own business as well, so starting the business side of things wasn’t scary either. As time has gone by in my career, I’ve honed in on my specialty and worked to build the practice. It’s really always been the dream and I’ve felt very comfortable and confident through the process.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I come from a family that has professional roots in the eating disorder field. I have family members in the therapy, nutrition, and education realm of eating disorders, so it’s something I am very familiar with. I’ve wanted to follow in their footsteps for a while, which had me on track to be an eating disorder therapist from my senior year of high school. It’s definitely been a long, hard, and tumultuous road. Besides 6 years of school and it’s own challenges, I have had to fight my own battles through the years. It created a lot of stress and hardships, but also amped up my drive to finish the path and pursue my dream. My hardships have increased my empathy and understanding for people, especially in the mental health sphere. I’ve been in the dark places and have climbed out of the pits. That’s the spark behind my brand, JoyWell. I’ve learned to find joy, when that feels like the hardest thing to do. Finding daily joy, even on the worst days, has transformed my view of mental wellness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is an ever expanding list, since the city is always changing and new places popping up. My go to’s are Buckhead Village, with dinner and drinks at Gypsy Kitchen. Nothing says Saturday morning in the city like a run on the beltline, followed by breakfast at either Buttermilk Kitchen, Flying Biscuit, or Little Tart Bakery. Coffee will always be Brash! I go there a few times per week. Buckhead, Midtown, and the west side all have great shopping. Taqueria Del Sol is a must for either lunch or dinner on a Saturday. My husband and I are a fan of just walking through either Midtown or Buckhead on a Saturday night, taking in the sights. The Works on the westside is a fun place to end the weekend. We will head to Dr. Scofflaws for a drink, walk around the around with our pup, and grab something for dinner in the food hall. This is just one of many, many ways we love to spend our weekends in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people that have helped and inspired me to get to where I am. I would say the main person would be my husband, who has been my rock and encouragement through the years of my career. He has pushed me to be my best, go after what I want, and keep me on track through the highs and lows. He is the one I brainstorm with, who helped me get through the nitty gritty of starting a business, and continues to be my constant. I also would love to shoutout all the numerous people in the field that have offered me a plethora of guidance, wisdom, and support.
