We had the good fortune of connecting with DaShean Porter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DaShean, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Charleston, SC—the “Holy City.” It’s a pretty small but diverse city. I didn’t travel out much as a kid so I would say the Gullah Geechee culture influenced me in a big way. There was definitely a lack of solid resources when it came to creativity and music which impacted my perspective on success and what it means to be successful. I quickly realized I had to have a DIY mentality and became inspired to be one of the people bringing resources back to my city to help build up the arts community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do my best to embrace my individuality in everything I do. I’m not trying to keep up or compete with anyone. My goal is to always do what feels pure and organic to me. I feel that’s always going to be the thing that sets me apart from others.

I can honestly say I’m most excited to share ‘Everything’s Lovely.’ It’s a body of work that I’ve been cultivating for the past few years.

I got to where I am today simply by constantly working towards progression. It’s definitely been a tough process, no lie. I felt like my desire for growth and peace of mind fuels me to face the adversity and difficulties this journey brings.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned was that it pays to have pure intentions and to know what you want for yourself in life. When you know who you are as a person and what you desire life becomes magical for you in the most positive way.

I want the world to know that my brand is all about positivity and love. I represent the people who desire to see positive change in themselves and the world around us. I put on for the dreamers and risk takers.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a great question! I’m a big fan of being in nature so we could go for a hike at Amicalola Falls which is North of Atlanta. We could hit the Atlanta beltline which cuts through different parts of the city (Old Fourth Ward/Poncey Highland being my favorite). We’d grab a bite to eat at Chattahoochee Food Works, Slutty Vegan, or Cultivate (I’m vegan and love introducing meat-eaters to plant-based eats). Then, we’d hit the Ponce City Market which, fun fact, used to be the old Sears Factory! It’s super dope now and has some local boutiques and restaurants inside. The rooftop is a vibe as well. Lastly, thrifting is one of my favorite hobbies so we could hit up Rag-O-Rama in Little Five Points, which is a cool artsy area with lots of bars, clubs, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a major shoutout to my mom. She passed away in April of this year. I honestly believe that she impacted my life more than anything. She always saw the good in me and encouraged me to nurture my gifts and talents. I probably wouldn’t be on this journey if it wasn’t for her. My mom was the best. She always saw my potential and cheered me on matter what. She deserves all of the credit to be honest.

I also have to give credit to my Uncle (my mom’s brother). He’s an artist as well and he was my introduction to music. I remember being a young kid watching him write songs and perform. It was the coolest thing ever! Those moments inspired me like crazy and still inspire me to this day. Major shoutout to Unc as well.
