We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevor Lucas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trevor, what do you attribute your success to?
Being purpose driven and God guided instead of money motivated. If you chase your full potential, money and success will end up chasing you. And in following God’s lead you always end up exactly where you’re supposed to be and your motivations will remain pure. Your clients and associates can feel the authenticity and will gravitate to what’s real.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Where I am today is a result of Life experience. Through the ups and downs of Life I think I’ve learned most from the hard times. The good wouldn’t be appreciated as much without it and there’s no progress without struggle. Pressure busts pipes from some perspectives but it makes diamonds in my mind. I fall 7 times I stand up 8, so at the end of the day the difference between a winner and a loser is the winner keeps playing until he learns to win. If I was asked these questions in my 20’s I’d probably connect my grind to getting money and being above the competition or something arrogant like that but my motivations are different these days. Life teaches you better along the way. These days I feel the gift God gives us is talent/opportunity and the gift we give back is what we do with it. My art is created from a place of purpose now. The lessons I’ve learned through life are expressed throughout my artwork. I’ve experienced a lot and in many ways I feel like I’ve made it out of a burning building without smelling like smoke. In other words I don’t look like what I’ve been through to get to be what you see today. I feel if you survive hardships it didn’t happen just for your good and to move on quietly. it’s only right to tell others in similar situations how to do the same. There’s a story behind every piece I create that speaks to uplifting the viewer and choosing better for us all. I don’t create dark art or things that feed into black stereotypes. We can only go as far as we can see and I made it my business to show the world there’s more and there’s better. Good representation and community motivation is my brand. Not only is that my brand but it’s my lifestyle. No marketing scheme or trend chase; I’m about everything you see from me. I’m a bit leary to speak from a personal space when it comes to what sets me apart; I’d rather let the viewer be the judge. But I will say from a deep down foundational stand point my belief in Jesus Christ and his principles set me apart from the direction that the masses tend to go. Some will place you in a box when this is stated but if you check my track record and like what you see, just know I am who I am because He is who He is. And my life’s work is due to being created by the Creator to display His goodness.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a foodie so the first places that come to mind are restaurants! I love food as much as I love art. So I’m in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. My Atlanta folks are more familiar with Virginia Beach, which is one of the main cities in the area. So allow me to give an itinerary for the day; breakfast lunch and dinner. For breakfast I’d take you to “First Watch” in Chesapeake, Va Greenbriar area, for a bomb start to the morning. Then we can take a trip to Norfolk, Va and hang out downtown “Waterside” a bit. Maybe take the ferry across the water to Portsmouth and back for the experience of it all. For Lunch we’d head to “Oceanview Pier” for a mean plate of fresh fried jumbo shrimp and fresh caught fish. Beautiful views of the Atlantic ocean, ease of a cool breeze, and a good conversation. We’d pack up and hit Virginia Beach to walk that seafood off; probably lay out a towel on the sand and relax a bit. It’s always nice to hear the waves and take in the Beach atmosphere. Then wind down a bit at one of two places…”Becca’s” at The Cavalier Hotel or “Orion’s Roof” just across the road atop the Marriott Hotel at the strip. Can’t lose with either. One gives the upscale garden feel with 5star service and the other has no seat without a great view of the ocean with top shelf service as well. After a day like that you’d sleep good that night with a deep sense of satisfaction…or maybe I’m biased
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be the man I am today nor in the position I am in life without my Wife Vandelette Lucas. She’s my teammate in this game of life and my accountability partner. Not only does she keep me grounded but she makes me better. I am forever grateful for the gift of her.
