We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Wingfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karla, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career path because art has always been my thing since for as long as I can remember. I started out drawing in elementary school and I never stopped. I would draw bubble letters, names, etc. anything that let my creativity flow in art was amazing to me.
What should our readers know about your business?
Wow, where do I start. Well, let me start from the beginning. I’ve always loved art even as a kid, I would draw all types of things, names, cartoons, etc.. and sell them to classmates, lol. I was never a fan of makeup. I’m the 2nd of 7 children. Everyone knows me as “KK”, family and friends., hence the business name “ KK’s Beauty”. The thought of makeup, even as I grew older never excited me. My younger sisters and my mom wore makeup but not me. It wasn’t until my older sister came to my house and decided she wanted to start wearing a little makeup. I was down for it so she let me try doing her eyebrows. It was so bad that after we laughed I cleaned them right off her face. But that, put a desire in me, from that moment forth I was definitely an active member of the “YouTube University”. I studied the craft and practiced really hard on myself every day. I was bad but bad with potential, lol. The love of Makeup has carried me through some strange times but not without the Help, Love and Grace of God. When I got started I was a divorced and remarried mother of 6 and my husband and I were separated. We quickly went from being a single parent family of 6 to a homeless single mother of 6. Things changed so quickly for us and we found ourselves going from hotel to hotel. We lost our entire house in storage because I couldn’t pay for it. Ironically, I didn’t put my makeup in storage because I wanted to continue practicing. Between being homeless with all uncertainty of our next place of shelter, to being kicked out of every hotel room we obtained because they said there were too many people in one room, I found time to still practice makeup on myself. This has not been a easy journey for me, it has definitely displayed its share of struggles for me. I’ve been a fighter since birth, blessing the world with my presence at 6 months of gestation, weighing a healthy 2lbs and 3 oz. I’m definitely a fighter. The world should definitely know that I am grateful for everything that I have and I take none of it for granted. My brand represents my life and my ministry. The obstacles that I’ve overcome has all been by the grace of God. If he didn’t Love me the way he does, I would’ve fainted a long time ago. One lesson that I know I’ve learned on this journey is the: God will never leave me or forsake me. In times I thought I needed my family most God said NO! He definitely sent strangers to help me and my kids. I remember waking up to the neighbors cutting my grass with scissors, I was utterly shocked. After the shock, me and the kids joined in to help. My brand is a testimony of God’s Faithfulness. I never saw it going this far for me. Now I have my own studio and people pay me to teach them what I know. Who would’ve thought that this could be me, I’m so humbled.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My most favorite place to eat is “ Hattie Marie’s Texas BBQ in college Park. Starbucks is definitely top on our list for drinks, we’re gonna need energy for this trip. Stone Mountain is not only an exciting place to live, but the mountain itself is a sight to see. The laser shows and fun activities will definitely make sure we stay fit and have fun at the same time. Tasha Cobbs Leonard is my favorite Artist and we’d definitely have to check her out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes definitely! My shoutout would definitely have to go to my Empire Beauty School of Northlake. I especially want to thank the staff like Ms. Williams (owner of stylease education), Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Bowman who are educators and administration who didn’t give up on me and kept me motivated to continue working towards my dream and to change my way of thinking to acquire different results. Sometimes the TRUTH is all you need.
