We had the good fortune of connecting with Johdi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johdi, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Everything in life has a risk. Big or small. Sometimes stepping out on Faith requires bravery. Being brave against the odds, obstacles, haters, failures, etc. I always just try to do at least one thing outside of my comfort zone. Most times it works in my favor. You just gotta do it! Risks are not reasons to quit or stay in the same place.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music is my baby. Every song written. Every melody sang. It’s my heart. Over the years I’ve really captured visions of love stories and even real stories from other people’s experiences to my own. I always try to make anyone listening can relate and connect with each song. It evokes emotions and feelings. It’s real. And honestly that’s what I’m most proud of. I want to always be authentically me without the pressure and influence of what’s “trendy”. This journey of where I am now has taken hard work and grinding. It’s not for the weak lol sometimes it’s a “hurry up and wait” kind of industry with music. It hasn’t been easy at all. But worth it. Even though I’m not nearly where I’m destined to be I’ve come so far. And that’s what keeps me going. Knowing that each time I make the decision to work harder, do another show, write another song, release another project…. It gets better. I grow. I move further into my journey. The lessons never stop. I’ve learned that having trustworthy people around you who fully support your dreams is KEY! Your circle is everything. I’ve also learned that we can’t be so hard on ourselves. So technical that we forget the fun and bliss of what we love to do. Don’t think so hard that it becomes paralyzing to your gift. Put that song out! Write that book and publish it! Start that business. Don’t let fear hinder you! It’ll all pay off. I’m never gonna give up! I’m gonna strive everyday to get closer. Writing music from my heart with good vibes and energy attached! It’ll always be authentic. Soulful. Music for everybody! From a black girl from a west hood of Detroit beating the odds!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In the city of Detroit there’s so many hidden gems! Of course the advancement and rehabilitation of Downtown Detroit offers so many great restaurants and bars to go to. And the scenery is pleasing. But there’s other hidden gems. Small Black businesses. The Block is a great place to eat. The food is amazing and the drinks are A-1! The Fashion District on Livernois is also really dope. Lots of cute boutiques and eateries. I’d do a day in Eastern Market where there’s fresh flowers and veggies/fruits available. Cute little side shops with ethnic clothing and handmade jewelry. We have an outdoor skating rink on Campus Martius. All types of cool things.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother has been my absolute biggest supporter my entire life. All the way from 2 years of age when I sang my first note all the way until now! She’s nurtured my gift fully. Taken me to every audition, rehearsal, concert, show, after school/summer program… you name it! She’s carried by water and towel during my shows. Played my assistant many times lol and she loves it. I never even had to ask! She saw what I was most passionate about and she helped me every step of the way. My hero literally! One day when it all pays off I’m gonna retire her and buy her dream home! She deserves it all!
