We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Dugas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what role has risk played in your life or career?
From the outside looking in, I may be viewed as a risk taker. Against all wisdom, I moved from California to downtown Atlanta at 18. This did not make for an easy transition into adulthood; however, I proved to myself how capable I truly am. Risk is a very scary word to me because it implies loss is a possible outcome, but I have never failed when I bet on myself. Starting my business was no different. If I looked outside of myself to define success, the risk seemed insurmountable. However, choosing to remain focused on who I am, where I want to go, and committing to learn everything in between, that’s a bet I’m always going to take.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am where I am today by a combination of great relationships, hard work, and lots of grace. My first client was a family friend who was venturing into the world of managing short-term rentals. In two years, we completed 8 short-term rentals around Atlanta, 13 student housing units in Colombia, South Carolina, and a vacation home on Hilton Head Island. The learning curve was steep, but with each project, I was more proficient, more knowledgeable, and gained confidence in my skills. After the Hilton Head project, I decided to pair my passion with knowledge and began pursuing my degree in Interior Design.
None of this was easy; the workload, returning to school in my late 20s, and learning to balance all of this while maintaining consistency with my family. However, I remained committed to my goal of building this business. There were times when progress felt slow, and comparison crept in and I had to choose to stay focused, stay inspired and stay faithful to the long game. Aside from my degree, I continued to find every avenue I could to learn. At times humility can a hard pill to swallow but the truth is, we don’t know what we don’t know. To expand my learning I sat with established designers that were willing to let me ask questions, listened to podcasts, and read everything I could. The single greatest thing I’ve done for myself on this entrepreneurship journey was to attend the Meridian Conference in Seattle Wa before I felt ready. Being surrounded by so much knowledge, success, and inspiration was just what I needed to expand my vision for the future of Adore Interiors.
The one thing I would want the world to know about me and my brand is that we are a continual work in progress. We strive for excellence in everything, but we know real success is being a forever student of the craft.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am such a homebody, but you can never go wrong with a stay at the Bellyard, lunch at Chattahoochee Food Works, and a show at the Fox Theater. Maybe I need to play tourist around the city more!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is so great!
I dedicate my shout-out to my family! They are truly my biggest supporters. Making the transition from full-time Wife/mom to solo-prenure, was an adjustment for us; however, they never wavered in their support.
Are second dedications allowed?
If so, Ginger Burton. Not only is she leading a phenomenal program at Chattahoochee Tech, but her support for her students is completely unmatched.
