We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonell Pollard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonell, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I am an entrepreneur and I still work a 9-5. Balance for me is key because I have to be fully functioning to make both work. I have to show up each day to better my business. I consider my 9-5 to be my biggest investor into my business so if I don’t perform well there how can I expect to perform well in my business. My job gives me a lot of lessons that I can implement in to my business down the line and I am grateful for that. Another part of balance for me is self care. I’m listening to my body now more than ever when it says girl rest.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a graphic designer and a serial creative. I help women plug into the girl boss inside of them through brand design. This journey has not been easy but the most fulfilling. Being an entrepreneur teaches you a lot about yourself and really tests your gangsta. Lol. I love that I get to create freely. I love that I get to share my work with the world. Social media does make it seem like entrepreneurship is a glamorous lifestyle all the time and that’s far from the truth. It can be grueling. However, it has opened my world up to so many people that I couldn’t have even imagined for myself. Yes you dream big but God is even bigger. I have connected with people from the UK to California to even Barbados. It’s truly amazing. Even through the hard times keep pushing and that’s what I tell my audience. Every lesson is a blessing as well as a testimonial. You never know who you can inspire to live their best life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I am a Jersey girl through and through so we definitely will go to a diner for brunch. Then we may catch a train to NYC and sight see, maybe some shopping. When we come back we can go to one of two of my favorite spots and that’s either the Cheesecake Factory or the Chart House which has a nice water view and the city skyline. Clearly your girl loves to eat. We can also do a paint and sip at Mae’s Art Studio.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many amazing women who have supported, mentored, encouraged, and blazed the trail for me along my journey. First, I have to mention my mom and my step mom. They are extremely strong women who even through the rough times still love hard and work hard. My entrepreneur sisterhood, they never leave me feeling alone in this crazy world of entrepreneurship. With every high and low, they are just one phone call away even if we all live in different states. My cousin Leah who listens to every crazy idea and says go for it. The women in my life show resilience, perseverance, strength, and undeniable faith which I believe are important for success in any field.
