We had the good fortune of connecting with Thea de Sousa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Thea, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up on a farm in rural Western Massachusetts. I have seven siblings. We didn’t have any money for utilities or groceries when I was growing up so we had to depend on animals and gardens to sustain us. We had to churn our own butter, make our own bread, heat our whole house with one tiny wood stove, and ride a bicycle to do laundry. And, we had no television.
So naturally as I became an adult I was drawn to television and movies as forms of entertainment. I worked in both arenas and have devoted my entire career to developing material that enriches lives just as these mediums enriched mine.
I worked on the second unit crew of Seinfeld and in development for such icons as Harold Ramis, Julia Roberts, and Jennifer Lopez. Now I develop scripts from home and I am a ghost writer. I believe my upbringing as a devout lover of books and with movies being my only entertainment outlet led me to choosing this career path.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I created my Instagram account @yourmomsarewatching a year ago with the purpose being to develop content that is humorous and thought provoking. I have honed in on storytelling as a way to set myself apart from the hordes of other meme sites out there. I began telling stories from my life and thus my site began to grow. I continue to make memes referencing pop culture, specifically Bravo shows, but I think my ability to connect with my followers through my life and career stories is what has made my site successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite city in the world is New York City. I lived there for 22 years, through college and graduate school. I shot many of the city’s exteriors for Seinfeld. I would take my best friend to some of our most famous landmarks and then for a booze brunch in the West Village at a cool spot like Pastis or Balthazar.
After brunch we would head to Central Park to people watch and lay out in Sheep’s Meadow. After a lazy afternoon we would grab a drink in midtown, maybe at a posh hotel like the Hudson, and then head to Bar Pitti to have some veal Milanese on their outside patio.
After dinner we would get a high end cocktail at some place fancy in Soho like the Mercer and then go to a rooftop bar like Restoration Hardware to see if we bump into anyone interesting.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to Elaine Goldsmith Thomas, a juggernaut in the world of creating memorable films and television shows. Elaine mentored me and is a personal friend and entertainment icon.
