We had the good fortune of connecting with Mateo Briscoe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mateo, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Throughout my journey with music I always get really discouraged. I always ask myself “ should I keep going? Is this worth it?” And then I get someone who will reach out and tell me that my words reached them and spoke to them and that’s my sign to keep going.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a singer/ songwriter from Sacramento Ca. Making music, for me, has always been about reaching people who feel a little different, people who struggle with self identity or mental health. Growing up wasn’t always easy. Being the middle child ,in a split, household being heard felt almost impossible. I always knew I communicated differently than the rest of my family. Writing songs and stories has always been my therapy and escape.

For as long as I can remember any time I felt alone or overwhelmed I would sing how I felt or I would write short stories, instead of talking about it. It just flowed naturally that way. I wasn’t always good but I could tell that it entertained those around me. So I figured, if you hear me when I’m sing then maybe that’s the best way for me to communicate with others.

I didn’t really find my voice until I started hormones. Finally becoming the man I’ve always been gave me the confidence to go after my dream full force.
I was always told I had a lot to say and could inspire others. That I was an old soul in the wrong generation. But I believe that I was born in the right generation. If I could impact the people of my generation with my words, with my full heart then I’ve done what I was out on this earth to do.

Being confident in my professional journey can be tough. There is always that anxiety of someone not liking what you create or not liking what you have to say. But that’s the thing about life, not everyone will agree with you and that’s a hard truth I had to come to terms with. This journey has thought me strength, patients and has given me the confidence I never had as a kid. Making me want to give that same energy to others.

My goal with music is to make sure that people like me know they are heard and not alone. To let people know it’s ok to just be you as long as you’re not hurting anyone. I want to inspire the world, leave this earth knowing I made someone feel seen and maybe even made them dance and smile a bit.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Sacramento is home to me so there are many thing I love about this city.

When It comes to going for food, Dads Sandwiches, Bento Box, Oz, and Betos Tacos are some of my favorite spots.

When it’s comes to fun summer nights my friends and Family have always loved going to the West Wind Drive Ins. You get snacks and bring blankets and just have a great time. We also really enjoy Faces night club Badlands, R15 bar and coin Op are some of the best night out spots.

Here in Sacramento there are always fun events going on. Summers we have Concerts in the Park and Cesar Chavez, Ace of Spades has always been one of our favorite spots for concerts.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be as far as I am without the support of those closest to me. Of course to my mom, my siblings and my best friend for always supporting me even when it was rough.

But I also owe A Lot of thanks to Jesse Hanes and Jesse Szabo of Let’s Go Studios. These two have believed in me and shown me so much love and support since we met.

I wouldn’t be where I am professionally or personally if it wasn’t for them. They have a huge positive impact on anyone they come in contact with. They inspire and they encourage others. They are both so incredibly hard working and talented. They are my brothers and they hold a special place in my heart.
