Meet Branden May | Street, Architecture and Portrait Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Branden May and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Branden, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance has always been difficult, but it wasn’t until all of my kids were home at the beginning of the pandemic where things began to change. My previous employer wasn’t really understanding about me working from home with three kids, one of which who is on the spectrum. . After having multiple conversations with them, I decided to leave that position, and focus more on my family. This eventually lead me to pursue photography full time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My dad got me into photography when I was 12. I remember him showing me a camera and I just fell in love with it from there. I think I broke that camera that dad gave to me, but it still didn’t stop me from continuing my journey.
Starting out in photography, you learn the composition rules – the rule of thirds, leading lines, all that kind of thing. In my opinion, if you think the shot looks good, then that’s all that matters. Many photographers get stuck on the rule of thirds, the golden spiral or another element of composition, so there’s no variety in their work. I try to break the rules of composition and photography, but it’s more so just trying to be different and standing out a little bit more by not following the traditional rules of photography. I have found that being willing to take chances and learning from my mistakes has allowed me to develop my own unique style.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would start our trip by heading to Snooze for a bite to eat. They have amazing French toast, so that is a must! After eating we will head downtown to to get a few shots of the city. I know a few great locations on Peachtree where we can capture some stunning frames. Lastly, we would head to The Battery to grab a bite to eat and then catch the Braves in action. The next day, we would definitely hit an early morning bike ride (even though most of friends aren’t cyclists), and maybe head to the High Museum for an exhibit. As far as nightlife, we would have to go to Edgewood Ave. or Virginia Highlands, there’s always some excitement happening there.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well of course my shoutout goes to my wife Brittany! She has been my biggest cheerleader and driving force behind any and all of my success. Since the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey Brittany has been my rock. Without her love and encouragement, I am 1000% sure that I would not have gone through with this. She has always been there gently nudging me along, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
