We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Allana and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christian, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I think of the word pursue, I think of this path I’ve been on for over 30 years. This particular space, I’ve been constantly gaining knowledge and wisdom. I do believe this is certainly a God- given talent, I had no idea I even had. It actually feels like this path chose me. I’ve always been interested in creating designs. I’ve always loved colors, shapes and patterns since an early age.
I remember being interested in painting and creating portraits around the age of five years old.
My mother enrolled me in art, sewing, dance and piano at six years old. My love for fashion formed as I got older and became more fascinated with every single aspect of the fashion industry. The feeling of embracing my creativity gave me a sense of joy. My love for fashion was influenced by my mother. We shopped a lot, and I mean a lot! When she bought something, I knew I was getting something too. She never allowed other people’s opinion of how she dressed, and how I dressed make us feel insecure or uncomfortable. Because of her, I gained confidence in knowing I could do anything if I put my mind to it. We attended fashion shows, and even had several fashion shows around the house, of course walking the runway in my very own creations. Dressing up in clothing that I made was the most beautiful feeling in the world!
Fashion became a way to express how I was feeling. What I enjoy about designing is being able to bring my art / designs from my imagination to my drawing pad, and then to life. I enjoy sketching, sewing, trend research, pattern making, draping and being that innovative person on the daily. Being creative allows me to express myself and pour everything into my craft.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The name of my brand is Christian Allana. “Christian Allana ” is a contemporary women’s ready to wear and evening wear collection with unique, edgy and athletic details. My muse is someone who is very fashion forward, confident and sexy…Hence the tag line for my brand “Femme with and Edge” My designs are simple and sporty silhouettes with hints of feminine details, textured fabrics and athletic trims.
I’ve always thought the beginning stages are the most exciting part. Researching trends and fabric are at the top of my list! My passion is looking and examining images that inspire me. The feeling of being inspired to create something gives me this energy of new fashion possibilities. I work long and sometimes unusual hours. There are several deadlines in which I have to meet for clients. The best part of my process is the end or the finale of the design. The process of a design culmination sometimes leaves me speechless in knowing, “I actually did this, and others will see my work and love it too.” It’s very rewarding!
My most compelling project that I recently worked on was a collaboration with Shein. This was a huge opportunity for me to showcase some of my designs and work with one of the largest online fashion retailers. I designed an eight-look collection specifically for the SheinX Program. This collection just dropped in May and is available online to purchase. This was such a significant experience which allowed me a platform to showcase my collection on a global scale.
I’ve worked very hard professionally to where I am today. My work ethic and perseverance speaks for itself. I am constantly setting goals to reach. I also believe in self- love affirmations because I am always striving to become the best version of myself from the day before.
I’m not where I want to be, but I will get there. What pushes me to go further is the yearning to learn and grow. I also make goals to step outside of my comfort zone every now and then. Being stagnant is not a part of my routine, I love moving forward.
I am a single parent raising a 6 year old son. I work full time as a designer in a corporation, while also maintaining my own business. My day is complex to say the least. It has been somewhat challenging finding that balance between work and family. I am beyond blessed to have such a supportive family and supportive tribe of friends.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Love that question! A fun night with my best friend would be hanging out at Ponce City Market. I love the vibes! The atmosphere is very chill, great food and drinks and some activities are always nice. Next, I would take my best friend to visit Stone Mountain. I love being active and always up for an exercise challenge. We would check out the boutique shops here in Atlanta. You can find many unique and interesting things that you won’t find in most places. One of my favorite areas is Little Five Points. For fun, we would have to head straight to Slingshot Social.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I would like to recognize my mom. She gave me recognition for my story and also helped me begin my journey. She wore many hats, as she still does today. She was a school teacher, dance coach and also a mother to so many of her students. She’s been my biggest cheerleader. She raised two children as a single mom which undoubtedly taught me about strength and tenacity. I’m very thankful for my mom for pouring into my talents and supporting me in everything I have always wanted to do. I would also like to give my brother some kudos for supporting my dreams. Last, I want to thank my heart beat, My Son, for always giving me a reason to be the best version of myself. I hope I make him proud!
