We had the good fortune of connecting with Peta-Gay Barrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Peta-Gay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As an black woman working in corporate American, I saw the need to do something to inspire the women of my age group. We spend a lot of time taking care of work, spouse and children but not as much time on our selves. So I decided to share my fitness journey in hopes of helping to empower women to improve their overall health through fitness and nutrition.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would say I have 2 very different professional life or career paths. The 1st as a hotel general manager and the 2nd a fitness and nutrition specialist. I graduated from the University of Alabama with a BS in hospitality management, where I also competed as a track and field colligate athlete. Upon graduating college I competed on the post colligate level, representing my birth county Jamaica as a sprinter. I did all this while starting my career as a hotel manager. Early on in my career I would take a leave of absence for 1-2 months at a time to compete internationally. As I advanced in my career this became more complicated, so I decided to focus on being the best hotel general manager I can be. I also used my knowledge and experience to start my own company Barrett Fitness. Over the last 8 years I achieved my certification in personal training, nutrition and women’s fitness. It is hard balancing a professional career and build a personal brand but having passion for both make it worth my daily efforts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would go for hikes along the Chattahoochee River Trails, Kennesaw Battlefield Mountain and Stone Mountain. We would have a girls spa day at the Intercontinental Hotel in Buckhead and order room service. We would check out the Atlanta History Center, High Museum and the Atlanta Aquarium as well as the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Dinner would include 2 of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta Nan Thai Fine Dining and Oceanaire Seafood Room, I am a pescatarian and these 2 restaurants serve up some of the most delicious fresh fish in the dishes in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The company I work for, Remington Hotels! While being a hotel general manager can be pretty hectic and stressful at times, the company provides great above property leadership, guidance and support. They provide the tools, equipment and policies that are needed to perform my role in an effective and efficient manner. This allows me the flexibility and balance to spend some time on my second passion of motivating not only my fellow co-workers but other women through fitness and nutrition.
