We had the good fortune of connecting with Bruce Kramer. Ryan McCusker, and Doug McCusker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bruce Kramer. Ryan McCusker, and Doug McCusker, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Prisoners of Rock and Roll is a podcast about music hosted by Bruce Kramer, Ryan McCusker, and Doug McCusker. We’ve been kicking around the idea for the show for several years. Ryan and Doug run a family business called McCusker’s Tavern in Philadelphia. Bruce tries to stop in whenever he’s in the city, and the conversation inevitably always turns to music — what concerts are we going to, what are we listening to these days. One night, one of us joked that we should have a podcast about music.

McCusker’s Taven was closed during the pandemic. Bruce’s wife Jess told him that it was a good time to try starting that podcast since Ryan and Doug had some more spare time on their hands.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The three of us didn’t know anything about podcasting before we started Prisoners of Rock and Roll. I regularly listen to a bunch of different podcasts, so I tried to start paying attention to what I like about certain shows. I also started reading articles on podcasting — what equipment to buy, what type of editing software to use, and how to launch a show that people will want to listen to.

There are a million podcasts about music out there, so we decided to focus on listeners who want to learn something and be entertained. The history of music is full of interesting stories, and we love learning about them just as much as we do talking about them. And, of course, it’s also important for us to have some laughs while doing it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Jess was the one who kicked the three of us in the backside and encouraged us to get this project off the ground. She knows how much the three of us love listening to, learning about, and discussing music, and the downtime that came with the pandemic gave us an opportunity to give it a shot.
