We had the good fortune of connecting with Seanna Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Seanna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had been a Nutritionist for years before I started my company, Hockey Snacks Inc. One day, the idea just came to me. My oldest child, 7 at the time, was at an early morning hockey practice on Saturday morning. Parents were taking turns bringing snacks for the players afterwards and this was not my particular week (I was the buzzkill Mom always bringing homemade muffins and fresh fruit).
We all walked into the dressing room at 8:00AM and saw the kids eating doritos. I knew we could do better, but we’re all so BUSY.
It dawned on me that there was a gap in the market when it came to nutrition for young athletes. Parent were well meaning, but didn’t know how to fuel their kids for performance, and kids didn’t know what foods gave them energy or helped them recover.
I knew if I could provide a business that made nutrition easy and convenient for both parents and kids, I was onto something big. And Hockey Snacks Inc was born!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hockey Snacks began because I saw the need to bridge the gap between being a young athlete and fuelling for performance. Too often, we depend on packaged and processed foods that are marketed to athletes, without thinking about how we could fuel our bodies with foods you have at home. Of course, you can find a balance between the two-and that’s where I come in. Helping young athletes and families with their nutrition in a realistic and sustainable way that works for their them and their schedules!
With three kids of my own that are all in sports, I know the challenges that face parents every day. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping other families make it easy. I believe that’s what sets me apart from others. Realizing that the information is useless if it doesn’t actually work in a realistic setting.
The pandemic threw a wrench into everything, as I worked with youth sports teams and did most of my work in-person. I took it as an opportunity to go online and since then, I’ve been able to reach more people, which has been fantastic!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Toronto is a beautiful city, full of diverse cultures, foods, and locations. There is something for everyone! I love walking the boardwalk down by the beach, or riding my bike through the many trails that run through the entire city. Walking around Kensington Market is one of my favourite places, there are so many interesting stores and cafes, art, and restaurants. I could spend days there.
I love going to the theatre, Museums (like the Royal Ontario Museum), and the Art Gallery of Ontario, but I would have to say watching live music at the Budweiser Stage is probably my favourite. An outdoor venue where you can enjoy a show and see the stars. And of course, you would have to go see the Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors, Blue Jays, or Argos while you’re here!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am surrounded by amazing women that lift me up whenever I need them. Women that are also small business owners, going through the same struggles, understanding and listening, and offering advice when I need it. I know I can call on these women when it matters the most-and I would return the favour anytime.
