We had the good fortune of connecting with Dathan Thigpen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dathan, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
In my music career, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to trust the process and trust my gift. In most cases I’ve learned that the process is not always exactly like I saw it in my head. God almost always has a specific plan that you never thought of. If I did, I wouldn’t need him. It’s important to stay the course to see God’s full plan.
I’ve also learned that my gift is like no one else’s. What I bring is valuable to someone. People need what I have to offer. Some won’t appreciate it but I’m most concerned about the ones that will and do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was brought up in church. Singing gospel music is what I’ve done my entire life. My gift was birthed and developed in the church. And even to this day you won’t really find me on a Sunday not singing somewhere or leading worship. The church has been my training ground. The soulful sounds you hear when I sing has it’s roots there. Singing hasn’t been much of a challenge at all. This industry is the challenge. Trying to fit what I uniquely do into an industry that tries to tell me how I should be or do it has been very difficult. On one hand you want to trust the professionals that are already doing it. On the other hand you want to do what hasn’t been done as well. You may trust what you have but they may not always get it intially. Sometimes you have to prove to them you are worthy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d totally start at Ponce City Market. We’d get some ramen from Ton Ton Ramen & Yakitori. Then we’d head to the Beltline and grab some scooters and find some ice cream while we’re out riding.
We’d end up at Top Golf as I showcase my lack of golfing skills.
We’d definitely take a hike one day on the many trials throughout metro Atlanta. Vickery Creek Trail is one of my favorites because of the water fall it leads to. The Bamboo Forest on the Chattohoochie is also a favorite in Sandy Springs.
We’d have to cap it all off with a trip to Six Flags Theme Park & White Water. I’m the ultimate thrill seeker.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I often say no one would ever come hear me or see me if it wasn’t for what God has placed inside me. So I must first give God credit for the gift he’s placed inside of me. Also, I must say that every experience allows me to grow and has shaped me into who I am today. So to every one who’s invited me on a stage, taught me a song, took a chance on me, sang bgvs, featured me, you are all a part of my story. A huge shoutout to all of you. You know who you are.
