We had the good fortune of connecting with James Kamawe’ and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been around entrepreneurs, both my parents owned their own businesses through out my childhood. I also realized that being in a position to create opportunities for myself and others was more fulfilling than awaiting a paycheck. I always found myself being more efficient and productive when I am responsible for more than myself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have owned a media based company since 2004, right after high school, I registered my first company Circle Group Entertainment. I used to promote events and produce music. I worked under that for some years then I got into radio and started building media departments for various companies in need of creating a digital footprint. Around 2017 I registered Circle Group Media LLC and I got my first government funded project. When I saw the earning potential outside of entertainment, I transitioned into doing more corporate and political work.
Since then, I have worked on the last Governor election on behalf of Democratic aspirant Stacy Abrams and various other candidates needing digital marketing. More recently I have gotten more involved in the cannabis/hemp legislation and joined a lobbyist group the Georgia Cannabis Industry Alliance. It has been an interesting journey and one of many variables but that’s the thing about business you have to anticipate the ups and downs. As a first generation immigrant I literally came to this country with $500 and a dream so I very rarely see my disadvantages or limitations I focus on the possibilities . I move on purpose and faith so, if I believe I can achieve and very rarely is money my only motivator, it is a byproduct. I have built many lifelong relationships and my reputation has been my insurance policy in most cases. So if I was to advice anyone out there it would be to build and cultivate relationships without bias and be an asset at all times.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It really depends on the season but let’s assume it’s nice and warm outside with low humidity and no pollen. We typically have events 3-4 days out the week throughout Atlanta. If they hanged with me there is no telling where we could end up.
We could end up at a an album listening party of a friend, possibly be at an event somewhere around the Beltline.
I will be honest and say I never really plan stuff like that because I get better results when I go with the flow of the day. I also take into account the persons interests. In some cases you got the visitor that wants to visit historical sites and monuments (Coca Cola, The Aquarium, Apex Museum, Stone Mountain etc)
Then you might have a crowd that wants to party and only enjoy the nightlife and social settings depending on what night it is there is literally too many places to name but Atlanta is never without an option to party.
Overall I typically patronize places and people I know personally and people who have supported me in various stages. Lately I really enjoy going to the Atlanta Comedy’ Theatre, I can watch stand up comedy all day and they always have someone I am a big fan of.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people deserve credit for contributing towards my journey but most importantly I would like to thank my wife who is my greatest ally and business partner. Of course both my parents and I can’t forget my haters and my detractors who always motivate me to supersede all expectations, where would I be without all of them?
