We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Hodges and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, how do you think about risk?
When it comes to taking risks I think that it’s inevitable because life is all about taking risks. As you gaze into the world of a entrepreneurship risk taking is necessary for the vision/brand and or business that you’re trying to execute. Risk taking can be a challenge and I’m always up for the challenge because I believe that it’s beneficial to my growth. The growth that comes with growing pains that are necessary.. Take me for an instance, I’m a mother first but I also hold the title of Nurse and Author. As I look back on my life all I see are risks. I took a risk bringing a child into this world in hopes of them being protected, groomed and raised up to their full potential. As a nurse for 13 years in counting it’s a risk everyday that I put on my uniform. Now as a new author the risk came from not only sharing my story with strangers but also executing the branding. At the end of the day, I lock into my faith when it comes to taking risks because faith without works is dead.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Helping people is what I do. I legit love humans and being able to help them in the capacity that I am able to brings me so much joy. For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to work in healthcare. Being able to graduate from an accredited nursing program and obtain a license as a nurse is one of my greatest accomplishments. As it pertains to nursing, the career path that I chose was pediatrics. Initially my career started off as a respiratory care nurse in long term care pediatrics for the first 6 years. For the last 6 years I’ve been working as a speciality nurse in pediatrics where I’m now in the clinic setting ranging from Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology and Ears, Nose and Throat. Ultimately the goal is to become an educator in my career.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a Jersey girl by heart but Atlanta has defintely become my home away from home. I love the city, the people and I love the food. A week long trip with me would most definitely include brunch dates, eating pizza with extra cheese and pepperoni and indulging in some much needed wine tasting and girl talks. Being a big kid is also in my nature because I love the intimacy when I’m hanging out with my bestie. I’m defintely going to show out in a game of bowling, pool and uno and I’m not losing either. I would also incorporate painting with a twist and visiting a few black art galleries. Aside from that, just exploring the city and taking it all in. Life is short and I strive for the opportunity to connect with new people and creating new memories.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All recognition and praise for who I am.. where I am .. and where I’m going all goes to God. It may sound cliché to some, but if it wasn’t for the Grace and Mercy that was given to me by God I honestly don’t know where or who I would be today. I have been redeemed and I’m always going to give thanks and props to the man upstairs. My relationship with God has always been my driving force in my personal life and career. Throughout this journey called life he has connected me with so many beautiful souls that I have also played a major role and I will be forever grateful.
