We had the good fortune of connecting with Autumn LaBella and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Autumn, how do you define success?
I define success as the level of happiness and flow achieved after honor and hard work have been stitched into the fabric of a movement or task.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I am the Founder of RecPlex Studios, LLC., an interactive art studio that I created to share pieces of my journey as a musician and a Certified Recreation Therapist. My therapy license gives me the ability to penetrate the healthcare market with an unfamiliar and authentic space for holistic healing. I specialize in using music, creative and fine art, and tai chi to improve the quality of life for others. When people invest in a live performance, class, or a project with me, they know that I’m going to do whatever it takes to make room for peace and love to flow. I provide meaningful and uplifting experiences, and that is something that people don’t forget because they FEEL it. I get to stay true to my purpose and that’s what is most exciting about being an artist-entrepreneur right now.

I make time to learn because life was never guaranteed to be easy. I seek out wisdom and instruction. Studying and practicing my crafts is essential for my overall happiness. My formula for survival is prayer and fasting. I do my best to let go of things I can’t control. I remain humble but alert and ready. I make time to intentionally love on myself everyday because I am deserving of love and kindness. I’m unlearning negative self-talk as a coping skill. I push myself out of my comfort zone to make sure I stay prepared and ready for opportunities. While prayer is my ultimate line of defense, I have an amazing support system that encourages me to stay nourished and remain resilient.

I graduated from Old Dominion University with a major in Therapeutic Recreation and a minor in Exercise Science, and I’ve always been fascinated with our body’s and mind’s ability to heal itself through divine operation. Old Dominion is where I first decided to embrace my tunnel vision when it came to using music to heal me through rhythm & wordplay. I’m most proud of the fact that when I look back on those days, I’m still going, I’m still evolving, I’m still alive and I’m actually well enough to bring my creativity to life. It feels good to be an admirer of art again, and specifically my own art. The past few years have had me in a state of survival, but time has taught that life is too short, and it is an insult to the Creator to not share our version of life’s beauty.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

In order to achieve flow, challenge and skill have to at some point find balance. In order for a flower to blossom, it needs the right conditions and nutrients.

My Creator deserves credit for giving me life so that I may create space for more peace and beauty in this life.
My ancestors and my parents deserve credit for their unconditional love and will to pass on their anointing.
My brothers deserve credit for teaching me how to conquer fear.
My sisters deserve credit for teaching me how to conquer insanity.
My tribe deserves credit for all the safe landings they’ve provided when I needed physical, artistic, financial, mental, and spiritual support.
The DMV music scene deserves credit for cultivating my desire to make people feel music.
African American culture deserves credit for making life-saving music.
I deserve credit for every time that I choose to stay true to myself and my higher purpose.
