We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaliyah Burt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aaliyah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is non-negotiable when you’re an entrepreneur. The journey of becoming your best self or producing your ideal business will always include risk taking. The realization that you will fail sometimes is one of the most frightening things about life and entrepreneurship. Growing up as a young black woman, there is always a standard of excellence that we strive to obtain. There is also a non-written rule that makes young black women believe that they should try to do things alone and all by themselves. It was a risk for me to start reaching out to other women who were successfully running beauty businesses like mine. Some of the attempts did fail. However, when I reached out to other entrepreneurs who were willing to give advice and encouragement, I saw my business improve dramatically. Taking risks taught me one of the biggest lessons in life. You need people in your life . Everyone needs relationships and teams to get to the next level.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My name is Aaliyah Burt and I am a makeup artist specializing in natural glam, bridal, and editorial makeup. What sets me apart from others is my ability to be personable. I try to tailor each beauty session to the client to create a five star experience. I take pride in the work I produce as well as the experience I provide. That’s what my clients fall in love with. My professional journey has taken time and patience. Hard work and dedication is the best foundation for success. The most exciting thing about being a makeup artist is that their is always room for opportunity and growth. There are so many industries that depend on makeup artists like TV and Bridal which always stimulates room for creativity. I plan to travel across the globe as a professional makeup artist and beauty educator .

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Montgomery has a few spots that never disappoint. If you are a foodie like me, I would suggest Itta Bena for a good round of southern fine dining and cute cocktails. They recently started serving brunch on Sundays. I also love this cute underground bar called The Lower Lounge. My favorite local band Think All Be All plays there sometimes on Friday nights. I’d also recommend VIP Hookah Lounge downtown Montgomery for a good chill spot on the weekends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents and friends have always been my main supporters. My parents always allowed me to be creative when I was growing up. My friends on the other hand, won’t let me forget about my creativity. They will always ask me to tap in to my creativity.
