Meet Shuntavia Ruffin | Owner of Delightful Treatz

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shuntavia Ruffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shuntavia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always enjoyed making delicious sweets, and I began baking in my junior year of high school. So in 2020, I began making cheesecake stuffed waffle cones. After great feedback from friends and family, I tried out other desserts such as dipped treats, candy covered fruits, cupcakes, and more. Since I had such a great response in the summer of 2020, I decided to continue making treats on a part-time basis, and from there my business Delightful Treatz was born!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I am a home-based business located in west Birmingham, and I provide a variety of delicious treats. Also, I think I have gotten to where I am today, because I always make sure I have excellent customer service and communication is key! I treat each customer how I would like to be treated if I was receiving a service from a company, and I always make sure my presentation is great.

I want the world to know that Delightful Treatz is a business that stands behind great customer service, and strives to make sure every customer is happy with their desserts. Presentation and taste are a top priority!

Was it easy?

Running a business always comes with some sort of challenges, but you have to stay positive. I have learned that planning ahead is a must, and it’s never too early to start planning, which helps to keep your business organized. I would say that one of the greatest lessons I have learned is to always follow your own policies as it helps customers to know what to expect.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Birmingham is full of great places to eat, drink, visit, and hang out. First, I would take my best friend to eat at my sister Mara Ruffin’s restaurant, Bistro, on 19th in Bessemer, they have great food and drinks. After we finished eating, I would take her to the spa at Ross Bridge. Finally, I would take her on the Birmingham Pedal Tour to see the city at night, and have great drinks at the local bar in downtown Birmingham. And of course, I would make her some of my delicious treats to end the night right with dessert!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize my sister, Shandrea. She has been very supportive. I told her I wanted to start my own business, and, from that day forward, she has been sending me any tips or videos that might help me improve my craft as well as helping me with business knowledge and decisions.
