We had the good fortune of connecting with Jas Ingram and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jas, what makes you happy? Why?
One thing that makes me happy with my art is the opportunity it gives me to show generosity. I’ll include a friend in a sketchbook drawing or Inktober piece, or send art to someone unexpectedly… Once I had a booth at a popup art market and people were looking at my prints and realized I had thrown some original art in there cheap just for fun. My art gives me something I can use to bring joy. I think at my funeral it would be cool to have a box of art with a sign that says “Free – Take One”. I have piles and piles and piles of drawings, and a few of them are actually not too bad.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The thing that sets me apart, at least from what others tell me, is the line work in my ink drawings. I have developed my inking style over years and I take a bit of pride in making precise, clean lines. I work some in color, but when I have a gallery show, I like to exhibit my black and white ink art. Also, I’m excited to be a newly licensed Rat Fink artist. It really just means I can legally draw and sell Rat Fink art, but it’s proving to be a lot of fun and is already opening some doors for me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Place to see: The new elephant habitat at Zoo Atlanta – it’s super nice. Thing to do: Braves game! What else? Place to hang out: Waller’s Coffee Shop in Decatur. Musical act to see: My hero, Sass Parilla the Singing Gorilla! Place to eat: Havana Sandwich Shop on Buford Highway.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special shoutout to my friend and mentor, Buddy Finethy. For many years, Buddy was the driving force behind the artistic look and feel of the Mellow Mushroom restaurants. He has helped steer me in the right direction on occasion, and provided encouragement when it was most needed. Buddy has been that force in the life and career of many, many artists. He never rests and won’t let his artist friends rest either.
