We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Canty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always dreamed of ways to be my own boss. When I realized that I wasn’t making an impact at my 9-5 or doing something that aligned with my purpose I started planning my exit. It took some time, but I knew I had to do something that was fulfilling for me. I wanted to create some sort of change in people and my corporate job just didn’t allow it. I also knew that eventually I would need to have faith in order to become a full-time entrepreneur. I had over 9 months’ worth of bills saved; I had a strong clientele base and the support of my family. I knew that having faith would catapult me to just do it! These types of transitions are never easy but the thought process of just going all in makes you resilient, brave and it puts you in a vulnerable position that you cannot turn back from.

What should our readers know about your business?
It was defiantly not easy to tap into my line of business. Honestly, real estate in most parts of the world is a white male dominated industry. I am a double minority, I’m Black plus a female. That alone sets me far apart for the majority in my industry. Beyond that, my social media presence and how I am with my clients and future clients have set my business up for success. I’m a very relatable Realtor. I am not over salesy, I’m transparent, honest and I make the process of achieving home ownership enjoyable. I’ve made it to where I am today in my business by being me! I haven’t had to speak differently, dress differently or sacrifice my morals to achieve what I have. I am most proud that I am now able to create change and impact within my community. People now have equity, they have deeds, they’ve avoided foreclosure and have escaped poverty and are setting their families up for generational wealth. Being able to place a dozen plus individuals in these positions show me that it’s always worth it to take the risk and have faith. It’s always bigger than me but it started with me. it started with me betting on myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Roanoke has a lot of hidden gems! I would defiantly start in downtown Roanoke for a bite to eat. I’d probably go to my favorite taco spot Tuco’s and have some margaritas and queso dip! I’d then walk-through downtown shop at the local stores and take in all the diversity and culture that this area has to offer. I may stop my Bubblecakes which is a local bakery get a few cupcakes or slices of pecan pie. We’d take a short drive up to the lake to relax on the water. Maybe rent a pontoon or jet ski’s. Enjoy the mountain views and sunset. Maybe end the night a local brewery and people watch or enjoy some live music just experience something different.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who I owe gratitude to. first and foremost, my children. They are the reason that I push myself as hard as I do. I also would have to give a shout out to my mom for always supporting my ideas and being in my corner. My mentor and coach Quiana Watson! She’s living proof of what brown girls can evolve into. She’s given her time, resources, her tears and wisdom to help me and others succeed. Also, my community of like-minded women back home, there are too many to name but the support that I receive and encouragement from these ladies keeps me propelling forward. I see it as, a win for me is a win for all of us!
